Let me know how successful your recording is. Mine seems to have to reboot the camera to see video in the timeline. I'll be able to double-check it a little later.

I see video immediately in the timeline, I tried both continuos recording and motion detection and it works all right, now I have left only motion.

if you set it to 30 minute files, you won't see that file until 30 minutes has passed and the file closes and a new one is started, rebooting the camera makes it cut that file and start a new one so it shows up, patience grasshopper, or set it to do smaller files, maybe 15 minutes or something.

Actually I have set eight minutes that's why I see them immediately or almost.

Can somebody share a forced color image from night time? I am running a IPC-HDBW4300R-Z (4MP varifocal) at forced color 24/7 and the pictures is not bad. But I am keen to see how much better the starlight would be.

Here's a sample thumbnail:

I also received a 4231 from Andy this past week. I replaced a Hikvision 2CD2332-I turret with the 4231 (L shaped back patio, so I didn't need the varifocal, 3.6mm is almost perfect). My backyard has motion lights but no external lights from anywhere, completely black other than the IR from the camera. The image from the Hik with the IR off is a completely black picture. The image from the 4231 with the IR off and only moonlight is better overall than with the IR IS enabled on the Hikvision. If you have any older Hikvision turrets, this is a worthy upgrade, IMHO. Of course the mounting is different so if you mounted these directly on the soffit like I did, holes don't line up (3 for the Hik vs 4 on the Dahua) and you are making new ones, which makes me wish I had choose to mount them differently; Perhaps a short depth waterproof box with multiple covers, mount the camera on the cover, new camera, just replace the cover.

I have external IR lighting in the front of the house because I didn't like motion events of bugs flying by the cameras all night and I turned the IR in the cameras off. I was going to add external IR in the back but the 4231 is so good, it's made me reconsider those plans. I'm going to install a higher class PIR sensor and hard wire it to LED floods that cover the back yard from multiple locations. Regular light is more useful than IR when I need to walk back there at night anyways. FYI, when I said the picture of the 4231 with no IR is better than the 2332 turret with IR enabled, it is; very much so. That said, you will need some source of light if you want to get any facial features and want more than someone was back there with a height and weight estimate. If you don't have an alarm or lights and they don't see the camera, they may continue trying to do whatever they came to do anyways.

The rest of the Hiks will definitely be replaced with Starlights, with the exception of a PTZ I installed last year and a 4k that's en route from Andy for watching the kids in the front of the house; I'm not as concerned about a Starlight there as it's during the day when the kids are playing out there and a car tears through the cul-de-sac to turn around that I need coverage. I plan on adding a IPC-HFW5231E-Z5 focused at the entrance of the cul-de-sac to get better ID of vehicles/people entering and exiting. If anyone is interested in the 4k (HDW5830R-Z) I can start a thread about it and compare it to the Hikvision DS-2CD2532F-IS it's replacing.

I am interesting for the comparing~ lol, when can make it happen? lol .

Shout out and big thank you to you guys for helping me crank out my first 8 cam project.
Budget was $3000 and thanks to you guys came in south of $1800. Can't take you internet guys out for a beer but @hmjgriffon, @fenderman, and @nayr pm me so I can get you Starbucks.

Ebayed an HP Prodesk i5 4570 2TB Windows 7 for $250.
Picked up 2 Cisco POE SG200-08P for $60 each
Guy In my Computer club donated a 10 bay rack.
Had an extra monitor lying around.
8 PC-HDW4231EM-AS $115 each. Ordered from @empirecandy on Monday arrived Friday in San Diego.
Got an Non IP PDU for the rack for $70 (overpaid but the guy gave me rack)
Had some CAT 5 from a wire pull job left over.
Set direct to disk and 25fps maxing CPU at 60% average 42%
Reused part of the old VGA extender cable at the location and ran VGA to CAT5 adapters to do a 20 feet 2nd monitor for show.
Bought a punch down panel and shelves off amazon for $60.

Runs solid and looks classy

Made Newbie mistakes though

Should have bought an IP PDU for remote recycling to cut down on truck rolls. eBay

Motion min. Duration (Make time) setting freaked me out. (Should have read the help file) missed a 4 cop stop because of this. Had it set to 10 instead of 1. Trigger would never trig. Lol

So much fun I'm thinking of adding this piece to my IT business. Get plenty of leads just never knew how much labor and parts would be and stuff like facial recognition and license plate reading. In some cases I could see having 2 servers is better than 1 for big installs. 40+ cameras.

Need to find out how to save my config and back up the stored folder cleanly. Don't know if that database stays open or not.

Cool stuff guys. Thanks for helping me knock my first project out the park.

Curious about how fast these and the vari-focals, change from night mode to colour mode when a sensor light is activated?

Will be able to test the vari-focals later in the week. However if the response time is similar will order 4 to 6 of these for locations that I already know focal lengths because of now outdated Hiks (that were too slow to change modes to be useful).

Andy got this camera to me in less than a week. Thanks Andy! Hopefully I can squeeze in the time to test this camera. Busy with work!

Holy crap is this camera awesome. I got some pictures and video. I'll post it soon. This makes all my other 3mp cameras look like ass in comparison. I guess one by one I'll end up swapping them out over time. They aren't bad cameras but compared to this one, wow.

I just wish they made some of them with longer lenses like 12mm at least as well as the dome equivalent for indoor. the 3.6mm is great for overview with big depth of field, but fixed bigger zoom with deep depth of field for less $ would be great for a bunch of conditions like side yards and gates and corridor and doors. I don't want the camera right where the target is.

Yeah that would be great. No other choice at that point but to get the varifocal version for that. I sent an email to Andy for six more of these. They're just too good. I'll have some 3mp 4300 eyeballs brand new on the cheap for sale soon if anybody is interested. They are great cameras as well.

How are these for overview cameras? I'm thinking 4 or 5 of these about 20ft off the ground just giving me wide angle views of the garden. Probably leave them in colour 24hr as the LED floods will complement. Would be nice to know the colour of clothing of any intruders during the night.

Already have a 5231 and 8232 on the way from Andy which will be my low level face cameras. Will probably order another 5/6 5231's to replace my cheap Hikvision cams.

The starlight is king of the Hill at the moment, imo. It would be great for that. I haven't set mine up for real yet but in my exterior night picture and video testing last night, I had to drop 3d noise almost all the way down to zip for better video results and it was still an immaculate image. This is quite a camera.

Yeah for overviews I think these will be fine. Not looking for ID off these. Just the colour of clothes and maybe what direction an intruder came from and left towards.
