vendors can not support firmware updates beyond a certain period of time for most products.

They can. They choose not to because of cost.

^That and they want to sell the next model! What is the consumer incentive to purchase new if they keep providing improvements to an older model.

It's all about planned obsolescence. You can't sell new products to people if the old products last a long time.
