Hikvision as a brand

Sure I can add upfront too, but buried in my wall of text LOL is this:

OR maybe someone can run 30FPS when they matched camera and NVR brand, but using a 3rd party VMS is what causes problems.

Ahhhhh missed that. My apologies

I get it, you do a great job of explaining to newbs that way, I don't have the patience

off topic, i know it's recommended to have 1:1 fps:iframe

what if the setup is 1:2, so two iframe per second, other than having a bigger file size, what would be the drawback?

If using an NVR, not much.

If using BI, then it can be a delay between going from substream to mainstream, and if using BI motion detection, it can potentially miss motion.

Theoretically lesser quality in high motion/busy scenes.

In practice (NVR) I haven’t seen much difference. Though you may notice it in playback on a timeline as the marker “jumps” to find the next Iframe

one more question, if you look at the grass, you can see the flickering / "pixel shifting" and it seem to match the iframe refresh (it will show a 1:1 too but 1:2 is more extreme)

is it possible to fix this?

I've never found a solution

Hi all, I'm interested in getting a security system for the outside of my home. the company who gave me a quote uses Hikvision cameras. Are they generally good cameras? how about their software and DVR?

thanks
A few years ago I put in a system with 7 Hikvision cameras and a Hikvision NVR. I have a technical background (MS computer architecture) but didn't really know any thing about video so consider me a rank amateur.

I found the Hikvision system easy to deploy. But getting it to work in a usable fashion was another matter. Both the cameras and NVR are complex (and buggy?) with numerous components and parameters that must be configured. There was zero helpful documentation or support from Hikvision. As far as I could tell, all Hikvision knowledge resides as informal lore in their network of installers/consultants.

After a few frustrating months, I was ready to write off my entire Hikvision installation. But then I tried the Blue Iris NVR software. What a revelation! Great functionality, great documentation, great support. I was able to keep the Hikvision cameras and just scrap their NVR. After some experimentation, I did get the cameras to produce acceptable images. I never got Hikvision's on-camera storage/analysis/triggering to work, but luckily Blue Iris can do all of that at the NVR.

If you do go with Hikvision, I suggest you spend as much time evaluating your installer as you do the Hikvision cameras and NVR. I didn't find it to be a product line that is designed for or even really viable for amateurs.

^This 1000%.

As I mentioned, since the OP said they don't have time to research, the likely won't have the time to dial in and based on information they have provided to date, I doubt the installer is anything more than a trunk slammer.

If the OP wants sound advice, posting screenshots of the quote and terms will be telling.

I have no IT background or video surveillance but somehow I was able to quite easy deploy a Dahua system.

I’ve deployed a fair number of them since that time in 2012 and find them pretty easy to use. Like any technology one has to spend time and read and learn it

I don’t use HiK but I can’t understand how it would be any more complex than BI or Dahua or any other VMS

I have had a few Hiks over the years and Dahua is far easier to use. I think even BI was easier than Hik LOL. I am glad I got rid of my last Hik lol.

As far as I could find, there is no documentation that you can read to learn it. You can eavesdrop on expert discussions on forums, but even they appear to be just exchanging things they have discovered through experimentation. This is a stark contrast to BI that has a solid vendor-created manual and even more helpful vendor-created tutorial videos.
