Sorry for (almost) abandoning my thread. :-) While I still don't know what was going on... it appears to have settled down. Playback via the web interface now works fine all the time. I am recording at 15 fps which was the default (I think). All's well that ends well I guess!

Yeah... that will help a lot. The other problem that I am now noticing is that during bright sunny days, camera exposes correctly for the shaded area close to the house and makes the sunny part of the image to become very overexposed. I guess this can't really be resolved easily.
