At night, the standard 5231 Starlight is amazing, nothing is comparable (yet), but I have to install the 8 Mp camera where there is a security system , with outdoor detectors (some WatchOut extreme) and led lighting.

@ntsbl68 what 8mp cam are you referring to? If it's a new cam about to be released I wonder if we can get a higher resultion than 2mp with the low light performance of the starlight with the use of a larger sensor. It should be easy to show these differences online via a clip or frame grab. I look forward to seeing test results from the new cameras. I'm willing to test the new 5321 as well if that opportunity were to present itself via @EMPIRETECANDY or elsewhere.

Before I found this forum I was thinking I needed or wanted a 4K capable camera with h.265 compression—based on my experience with the broadcast production industry. The general consensus here seems to be to get the 2mp 5231 and set the focal length (optical zoom) relatively tight on the choke-point. This would be optimized for low-light. I'd love to see testing of the latest models where we can get a better idea of the degradation in low-light as the sensor pixel density increases. If I had to buy something today, I would purchase a few of these new 2mp 5231s from @EMPIRETECANDY.

8 MP is 4x as many pixels as 2 MP, so the sensor would need 4x as much surface area in order to have better low light performance (assuming all else is the same). I guess in reality a larger sensor is likely to be paired with a larger lens which does its own bit of good, but the point stands that a miniscule increase in sensor size from 1/2.8" to 1/2.5" isn't going to make up for each pixel being 1/4 the size.

I do not own a 4K camera but I hear people talk about how much better resolution \ detail you get when zooming in on a clip or image capture. AKA, you can have a pretty overview FOV but still digitally zoom in on a still image to identify someone in the distance much better than a 2MP image.
I think that would be the primary value?
...but it sounds like this may only hold true for well lit daylight images and not night \ IR images.

^ This. In low light you'll just be zooming in on less light captured/pixel and higher resolution noise.

Also, that's assuming all things equal. They're not really. The Starvis sensors in the 2MP are better optimized for low light in a variety of ways.

The lower pixel-density of the 2MP (1080P) cam has larger pixels that can capture more light and the lens on some of these opens up to an impressive f1.4, this lets more light in than say an f2.0 lens (this is spec is only valid on a full wide zoom position (max aperture). A 4K cam will look great with plenty of light (notice how a GoPro looks like crap in low-light). Also, the compression is less effective as the image gets noisy and would require a higher data rate to maintain quality. The industry push in professional videography is to have more pixels (4k, 6k, 8k) not better pixels... It would be cool to have a dual sensor camera that has two different sensors.

Yes, assuming the lens is good enough in the 4K camera, it is a noticeable improvement in image quality during the day (especially nice if you have a 4K monitor to display it on).

I have one of the older Dahua 4K cameras and it is pretty bad at night: DH-IPC-HFW4800EN (4K 1/2.3" bullet)

Here is a comparison of my 4K which has a wide angle fixed lens versus a IPC-HFW5231E-Z5 (2MP starlight with a good amount of zoom)




You'll notice if you zoom the 4K image to 100% it is pretty poor in the details, and I have a LOT of infrared in this area while also running the cameras at their maximum bit rate.

@MacFun I use the 8Mp camera because during the day is amazing, and during the night, there is enough light, and even because .... I can't install four 2Mp Starlight all in the same place !

No, these just load like any other images on any other web page for myself, and for most of the world.

Make a fast testing for the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE, picture looks sharp, first impression not bad. Should be a good model too. Today send a sample out to US for reviewing, the guys who booked the stock, can ship out on Tuesday. First lot we get 18pcs for this model. Let's see how it works.
