@nayr can you get out your ruler and give me the diameter of the mounting holes in the base and the distance between centres? I've got both these and their 4mp brethren on the way but the specs don't have that detail. Have to order stainless steel security torx screws to mount them and don't want to order m6 if they wont fit. The 2mp will be the overview / driver cam and the 4mp will be the plate cam. I've also got external ir on the way. What shutter speed did you need to run to eliminate the flare on the plates? Also what diameter is the lens?

@nayr will this one do for lpr at the 100 ft distance ?
As seen in your photo's the license plates are not to big.

Will that function to output a cropped 720p sub image deliver enough detail for lpr on 100 ft ?

I still have time, mso the 12x zoom will be available also i guess by that time.

As always, thank you very much for your review.
100ft is going to be the upper limits of this camera I think, and not good enough for programatic reading.. the 720p cropping feature is only available on the 4MP Cameras.

I want to place a camera above my back garage door and stairs. Basically have the camera looking at the door (so mounted under eve it would be about 5 ft away from the top of the door itself) and down the stairs to spot anyone on the way up and at the door.
I was going to use another IPC-HDW5231R-Z turret, but for this location I wanted the I/O option to set up something like a trip switch at the start of the stairs or door switch and the turret does not have I/O.

Would this Z5 be a better choice for me over the IPC-HFW5231E-Z bullet in a location like that?

depends if the 7mm FOV is going to be acceptable to you that close to the door.. Ive got a 6mm PTZ near mine and its fine, dont care to see people's shoes... otherwise get the regular Z if you want the wider range.

Camera Resolution Diagram.jpg
I had these done up in sketchup model that I was using to test camera placement, angles, and resolutions for my new ANPR setup. I use the geo-location feature in sketchup to import the satellite image of my house into the model, place the cameras where I think I might want them, and see how they fit in with my expectations. I thought a graphical representation may assist people with envisaging what resolutions they would get. Australian Standard for number plate recognition is 410ppm. If you have plans to human read only I've found that for standard plates with 75mm letters, you can read them at resolutions as low as 200ppm. Just double the 420ppm distances to work out where 210ppm is.

For anyone who wants to model these in their own sketchup diagram I have uploaded both to the component warehouse. Just search IPC-HFW5231E-Z5 or IPC-HFW5431E-Z5

I got my new Z5 up.

This is the turret I replaced, fully zoomed in:

The Z5 bullet, fully zoomed out, is almost exactly the same FOV!

Fully zoomed in:

And right in the middle, which is about where I want to keep it:

Night. There is also a fairly strong IR illuminator pointed this way.

For comparison, this is my old 12x PTZ with nearly the same FOV. The PTZ doesn't have its own IR, which actually makes it see through falling snow much better than the other cameras.

How much illuimination you got pointed it's way? Looks like a fairly dark intersection out there without much in the way of street lights. How far is it to that street sign we can see in the shot? And what's all that white stuff on the ground :D

I thought you had made a math error in the triangles, as I thought the ratio of the distances should be 1.4:1, but a closer review of both specs reveals that the larger aperture of the HFW5231E-Z5 widens the zoomed FOV from 10 deg to 12 degrees, which makes a fairly large difference in the ratio of the two moving it from 1.4:1 to 1.7:1. The chart is correct.

3 (3.5) cameras and an illuminator cast IR in that direction, all mounted on the same garage wall.

From left to right they are this Z5 camera, old Dahua 4MP turret, old Dahua 4K bullet, Amazon.com : Univivi IR Illuminator, 850nm 12 LEDs Wide Angle IR Illuminator for Night Vision, Waterproof LED Infrared Light with 12V DC Power Adapter for IP Camera, CCTV Security Camera : Camera & Photo, Hikvision 3MP turret. The Hikvision is pointed much lower than all the others so its IR doesn't really reach into the FOV of the Z5.

Looks like a fairly dark intersection out there without much in the way of street lights.
It is very dark. There are no street lights on my street or on the neighboring streets either. And no porch lights. All these cameras are seeing is infrared.

How far is it to that street sign we can see in the shot?
About 110 feet.

And what's all that white stuff on the ground :D
Goose feathers.

what is the spread like on that big ass IR grid? I haven't done any testing with external IR yet, I plan to this weekend, but I feel like based on my experience so far you'd really only want IR to be in a nice even spread across the entire frame of what a camera sees.

You are right, IR is best when it is even across the entire frame. This particular illuminator is extremely wide and fuzzy at the edges so there is not a sharp border where the light just cuts off. They say 90 degrees in the specs but I think it might effectively be wider than that.

Night time AutoExposure, has a tighter focus of IR to get the distance so it kinda hotspots at full wide

Do you know much a Z12 version would be in case people need more than 35mm of zoom?
