; buy a bag of chips at sea-level and drive it up here and if it hasent exploded it'll be super-inflated and ready to pop open with the slightest disturbance..
I have to soooooo try that next time we go on vacation up in the mountain. Maybe I will ask one of my kids to open the bag for me. *evil chuckle* .........

My IPC-HDW4231EM-AS and NVR5216-4KS2 arrvied. I ordered both from Andy on Dec 13th and received it yesterday which is 19th so that a total of 6 days from China to Missouri, USA. Thank you Andy for speedy shipping!

My first choice was IPC-HDW5231R-Z but it was out of stock everywhere and I wanted a camera now to test it with the NVR5216. I still plan to order the 5231 when it's back in stock to install around the perimeter of the house.

I probably will put the 4231 which I received yesterday inside my garage since anytime anyone open the garage door, the lights come on.

Bill
Good to hear that! If all stock in we always ship fast, i think after Christmas shipping speed will be faster. In NOV. we can do 3days from China to US, but here can't.

Thank you for the head up, I will check with seller first

What are your thought on 4231 as a front door camera? Do you think the 3.8mm lens is wide and close enough to cover the front door entrance way?

I plan to put 5231 on the corner of the house pointing to the walkway of the front door when more come in stock. But only the 4231 will be my trigger point to alert us someone at the door before they ring our doorbell (We have a light flasher when door bell is pressed).

Any feedback or advice is greatly welcomed!

Thank you
Bill

What did you end up going with for your front door camera? I am also considering the 5231 but thinking I may not need the varifocal lense there. I would like something with as wide a view as possible.

you say that now but then you end up being like this guy: Where to install turret camera I'm about to purchase?

for some reason all noobs think they want wide angle; then pretty soon regret the decision entirely.. thats what makes the varifocals so great; that and they have even better low light capabilities over the fixed variants; even if u wanted to run it at full zoom out.. the Varifocals outperform the Fixed lenses by a large margin.

Varifocal Starlights in this lineup have a F1.4 Auto-Aperture
PTZ Starlights in this lineup have a F1.6 Auto-Aperture
Fixed Lens Starlights in this lineup have a F2.0 Fixed Aperture

Bigger the F-Number the less light it will gather..

I am definitely ordering the 5231 after reading everything here, I just wasn't sure if it was the right pick for the front door. Once I get it I will just mount it up and check it out. Just waiting on Andy to send me a paypal invoice so I can get the discount.

and here is a back to back comparison between a Dahua 2MP Starlight Fixed Lens and Varifocal:

Dahua 2MP Starlight MiniDome (F2.0 3.6mm Fixed Aperture)

Dahua 2MP Starlight Varifocal Turret (F1.4 3.6mm Auto Aperture)

Both cameras were configured identically (1/30 Shutter, No Backlight, Gain 50%) and all IR disabled; the only differences between the two cameras were the optics as they are pretty much the same cameras in different housings.

I am throughly confused about what to buy. Based on the insanely good reviews of nayr, it has to be starlight. Now the question is whether to buy bullet or turret. Application is 3 outdoor cameras - one on front porch, one on rear deck under a slight overhang and 3rd on a wall, exposed fully to the elements. Can turrets really be used outdoors? I am guessing turrets would be fine on the front porch but bullets better for fully exposed cameras? Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

Turret are just as whether resistant as bullets... Not sure why you would think otherwise...

Very interesting. On the top video there appears to be a visible seam where the kids toy house is. Anyone else see that or is it just me.

ideally it should be three 60 degree fov @ ~5.8mm but im betting they have some overlap and stitching the streams together, without the video its very hard to even tell.

really wish that camera had a 1080 vertical resolution.

just install all turrets at this point, the only thing the bullet has over this is alarm input for real motion sensors and stuff; thats cool stuff but alot more complicated than just recording 24/7.

@nbstl68, bout ~$600USD.. not bad given cost of 3x cameras in one housing..

On aliexpress below $600 it seems.
The form factor is better than 3 seperate turrets or mini bullit units with 3.6 lens mounted next to each other i guess when looks mean something.

I will consider one for my back garden. I wanted minimptz everywhere, but this 180 degree one for overview, and a multifocal turret at each door for details seems a good way to have nice overview and close enough details when they do try to break in. Support of large ptz from above is also there, perhaps one with auto tracking for the graden only.

looks like the US site got another Starlight Varifocal Bullet in the Super Category: DH-IPC-HFW82A1EN-Z(I)

this has 140dB SuperWDR, and .001 Lux better spec that may account for additional IR range.

What you think would be the reason for theat limited resolution vertically ?

I assume if they stitch the images together they need some pixels to adjust. For example to have the optical path alligned and not to make a too costly hardware setup, and just move it together in software ?

im betting the 4096 wide was the limiting factor; perhaps encoding limitations.

honestly id rather have 3x1080p streams w/no bind spots, more standard. no dewarping easy to work with.

Fixed 4 mm camera's might be cheaper indeed. Will check them out.

Edit:
So the fixed IPC-HDW4231EM-As is like €125 ar BEC store. Empire is more expensive :)

So to compare:
3x camera IPC-HDW4231EM-AS = 375€
3 x conduit = 210€
3x bracker = 60€
3x cat6 cable = 60€.
Total a out 705€

Andy sent me a PM that is is 640$ so about 625€, and than it needs one conduit 70€' 1 bracker 20€ one cable 20€ = 735€

Well i would need 2 more POE ports on a switch, so total the price shoudl be about the same..

I ordered 3 IPC-HDW5231R-Z with wall mounts plus the 5216 NVR from Andy. I wanted to thank this community, especially nayr and fenderman amongst others, who are not only knowledgeable but very helpful. A million thanks.
