My short experience with having windows with a microsoft account is that you can't use windows if the machine isn't connected to the Internet. Meaning if you have a laptop on the road with no wifi available, it's a brick. Did I miss some trick to get windows started without a connection?

I have never had a Microsoft account on any of my PCs/Laptops, all running Windows 10, don't even have an account with MS. You just have to Login Locally. Yes I am DaKing, but only until DaQueen is home



Oh just read your post, I have the Pro version on all my PCs...mainly for Remote Desktop Connection/Protocol (RDP)

It's for your benefit, trust us! The obvious answer is to not use the home version, but won't this creep into all of the versions?

IIRC, this is how I did it when I installed Win 10:

• Install Win 10 from USB made with the Media Creation Tool.
• Use Ethernet if possible to connect to Internet.
• When it gets to the part where it asks for your MSA login or create a MSA, go back 1 step.
• Unplug your Ethernet cable or if you had to use Wi-Fi, turn off the Wi-Fi.
• Count to 10 then go right arrow/next and it'll create a Local account and won't even ask for the log in!

I've done it probably 6 times so far this year.

Like many of us on this forum and elsewhere, I've built/repaired/used PC's since DOS days circa 1983. Heck, I was using CP/M on Kaypros and Osbornes before that. For me, they were simply tools and a means to do my job......design, monitor and maintain traffic signals.

I bought an Apple II in 1980 to play with at home and write Basic programs to teach my daughter the alphabet. Quit smoking in '87 so I rewarded myself with a Mac SE. It wasn't long before I figured my brain was wired PC and not Mac...to each their own.

I just rode the tide wherever it took me..many versions of DOS, Win 3.1/3.3, Win 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT, XP, Vista, 7 and now 10. They all did what I asked and I generally only upgraded if I couldn't do what I wanted or needed to do with what I had...call me an old fart but I don't like fixin' things that ain't broke. If it works, leave it alone.

At last I'm very happy with 10; by now I've learned how to do a fresh install from a flash drive using the MS Tool and set up and activate with NO MS ACCOUNT; how to increase performance by disabling so much of the startup crap, privacy intrusions, app notifications and animation crap, how to disable auto-hide on scroll bars, and add desktop icons for PC and network, etc. and so on....you know what I mean.

My point? I'm happy with 10 and don't care about Windows 11. All the eye candy, bells and whistles just don't crank my tractor...a PC is still just a tool for me, a means to an end. I don't need to be amused or my attention held like a 5 year old with a PlayStation.

Ya skipped 8 and 8.1

So I am an old Atari guy, started with Atari 400, the computer , not a game console, though it had a cartridge slot. Put a real keyboard on it and saved $ since I could not afford the 800. We called it a Poor man's MAC, but We had Color and MIDI networking Anyway, went up their chain owning most all their units up to the Atari ST and then jump to the IBM 8088 chip PC. Played with a many Clones back in my day, guess we can still call them clones today...



I am one that will have cabbage/stones thrown at me but having also gone up the DOS/NT/Windows chain, guess I am just use to their O/S and NO/S WiIN10 has served me well, very few crashes/blue screens, if any with WIN10. They have come a long way, far from perfect, but I get a lot less calls then I have in the past. Main calls I have gotten lately was Ransomware, which requires a full reinstall. Will say I like XP, like most, but I am one that looks forward to new releases, so Windows 11, I will have to upgrade to in order to continue my local support family/friends/ex-coworkers, etc. As pointed out, we will boot our PC one day and it will look like a giant Smart Phone

I am sure I will try WIN11 on one of my PCs first, to play with it...

Oh, I still have my old 400, still boots up and runs fine. I got some used cartridges, think at a flea market, anyway, one day may need to put it into a Glass Case for my grandkids to laugh at

WiIN10 has served me well, very few crashes/blue screens

I agree that win 10 is pretty stable and it has some nice ease-of-use features, yet in total I hate it and use it as little as possible. I use it only on a dual-boot laptop because of a few apps that need windows. I'm almost always able to pull the rj-45 before bringing it up, but when I do let it connect to the Internet, it starts loading crap like crazy. The last time I let it connect, some conferencing app I don't give a flip about got installed without my knowledge or consent. To microsoft I say: I have it set up the way I want it, it works, keep your friggin hands off of it! The machine runs linux the other 99% of the time.

Yes, it's Home that will insist on the MSA unless you trick it; Pro doesn't insist.

Guess it didn't impress me much.
Stepmom's using one for bill payin' and e-mail as we speak, built it probably 7 years ago from used parts, a little ECS Elitegroup NM70-I Celeron 1037 Dual Core Processor Mini ITX, put Start8 on it because she was used to XP (she's 83!).

So @pete_c shared this with me:

Windows 10 does its own thing for DNS even though you are using DNS resolver on PFSense. Really the only way not to connect Windows 10 to the internet is to disconnect the interface. Way back I was running a script to disconnect it from the Microsoft servers and found upwards of 250 servers it would connect to (really more than that). I would clean up the registry removing these servers and the next update it would reinstall them all. Even embedded Windows 8-10 does this now. So that is why I like old embedded Windows that runs without the internet.

We both run pfSense and have been playing with IPv6, I noticed about 8 IPv6 Temp addresses this morning...He replied above, wow 250 plus DNS servers Windows would have connected to...Crazy...



Now it is back to two which I have been use too...was thinking one of my switches was doing some of it's own routing.

Taskbar functionality is changed including:

• People is no longer present on the Taskbar.
• Some icons may no longer appear in the System Tray (systray) for upgraded devices including previous customizations.
• Alignment to the bottom of the screen is the only location allowed.
• Apps can no longer customize areas of the Taskbar

I've been running the taskbar on the right edge of the screen since prehistoric times. I know I'm in the minority and most users won't care, but this is a huge deal for me.

I'm screwed, highest I have is a 6th Gen right now...been waiting on the 12th Gen for PCI-E 4.0 support...I got my hands on a Nvidia 3080 card last year...for my Gaming Machine...
