Wanting to be secure from being forced back under the Thump of Russia dominance is a key reason why countries and their people elect to join NATO.
To better understand why countries want to join NATO and not be under a new Soviet / Russian neo-empire / new-Warsaw Pact we really need to examine the information that comes from those nations and people who have joined or have asked to join NATO.
Too often the USA thinks of things as a black or white / polar set of sides .. ( USA vs communism, Democrat vs Republican, Godly vs Godless, .. )
It's fair to ask if we should or should not have encouraged Ukraine to join NATO .. yet, I doubt any of us wants to live under the system that is now Russia. It is clear that many Ukrainians do not want to live under the Russia thumb as is demonstrated by the Ukrainians standing up to the Russian invaders in protest.

Russian's actions in Ukraine represent an uprecidented challenge to
Ukraine's
1) Sovereignty
2) Territorial Integrity
3) Independence
This is a big issue, as once we accept that changing border is OK - we're opening up for more conflicts of territorial expansion. This reduces the stability of the world significantly.

Report from Today - claims Ukranians have wiped an entire unit out apart from 1 man - 2,000 soldiers (!) and 200 vehicles along with a 6th General. Also pushed the Russians back 70km as a result.
