Thank you everyone for the guidance!
I have purchased this vertical wall mount for the project:
StarTech.com 6U Wall Mount Network Cabinet - Vertical Wall Mount Patch Panel Rack - 30" Server Room Cabinet (RK630WALVS)
@looktall thanks! This is a great idea. I'll meditate on how this will look with wiring and poe switch.
@samplenhold good catch! I think I'm staying the course with what I bought. The server will get in going and if I build to it's size, it future proofs me in more upgrade ebay options
@sebastiantombs I'm reading through these. It was a couple of these posts that let me realize buying dedicated LPR was not the answer. Great knowledge here. Thanks!
Where was all this knowledge 3 weeks ago? Now what, try to return it on Ebay and build a custom machine? I think I would end up higher cost to recreate.
How about a bit of help on a camera for license plate reading?
Roughly 10" x 10"
X10SLL-F supermicro board
But if the notion is to transplant, I could just take the drives and abandon the old board. The dual power supply is nice to keep.
I feel like I'm back to analyzing and paralyzing. Lol
I am definitely leaning towards the HD version because it has fans, and the mount is long side which gives me access to both ends. The MEC room does get hot and cold as seasons change. I have a heater but not an AC. Let me get the wash turned back on and a few cars in the bays before I tackle...
I have bought and received the 2U server. Updated the BIOS, IMPI and installed what it can only handle Windows Server 2012 R2. Has 6x 2TB drives, 2 GB NIC ports.
I totally understand about the issue with wall mount. I consider the mechanical room as a wet area and prefer the electronics to be...
Geez... I missed this detail? Well I bought the server.
I thought it was a great deal for about $500:
2U Rackmountable Chassis CSE-825,
2x redundant power supplies (PWS-702A-1R)
Mounting rack rails
X10SLL-F motherboard
2x 4-Core 3.1GHz E3-1220v3 Intel processors
8GB DDR3 memory
6x 3.5" 4TB...
I think I am going to for this:
SuperMicro 2U Server, E3-1220v3, 8GB RAM, 6x TB SATA
Checking Intel website, this processor can quick-sync, has plenty of TB drives in it, 2U. I asked the seller to see if they had any POE+ to add to the deal.
I have been thinking about this for at least 3 years. So far I have conduit installed. Now I want to have the system built and tested with a camera at home, and then go install it at the wash.
I want to keep it in its original case. Your answer was enough wind in the sails to make this decision. I'll wipe my machine, fresh install, and put in the server rack on its side.
I need to wall mount my hardware and think I should do a 19" x 26" wall mount rack case. I would put 2 POE+ 24 port switches, patch cable, power bar and computer/server. I think a 12U is plenty for this. I need ~30 cameras for a car wash.
Having said all that I am at analysis paralysis. I have...
Thanks for the clarification edit! The motherboard requires a dedicated video card. I want to go with the NVIDIA Turing architecture so maybe a GTX 1650 Super or 1660. With this chip shortage its hard to find these cards under their original $200 price point.
Thanks to this forum/post like...
I thought about its age, 2014 debut. I looked at benchmarks and it was 92/1300.. Some of the suggestions on wiki are new cpus in top 20! I think being in top 10% of all CPUs is pretty good for surveillance. Worst case, in the future I can upgrade just the processsor while all the other...
Here is the latest equipment list. I just came back from a Craigslist purchase that I think I got a sweet deal and great start on hardware.
Equipment list
$700 12u Server rack SRW12RSNEMA
$200 Cyberpower OR700LCDRM1U Battery Backup
$200 Mounting hardware
$500 Wiring FTP, Crimper, Ends
$150...
Agreed. I think the math does makes sense to chop up a used desktop and move key components to the other form factor. The fans, power supply, motherboard could be upgraded too.
The case would be NEMA 12 to keep the dust out, overkill?
I guess I do not need a router or strip. Good puts.
KK, $200 avg/camera.
Thanks! :thumb:

I am unsure how hot it gets. Though will be sure to be mindful of it this summer.
Below is how I've divvied the budget. Any thoughts on improvements?

What a novel thought! I could build a computer in a rackmount server case. (I didn't even know that existed!!) And this omits a need for a dedicated NAS.
Let me expand on that... Wet in the sense that if a pipe bursts... like from the freeze we just had, I would like it off the ground. I can wall mount away from incidental spray.
Hello all,
I have posted here before about my car wash and the desire to get it on camera. After being vandalized several times recently, I am unable to put this off any longer.
Its pretty simple (well not so much for me), I have saved $5K and willing to invest it into a surveillance system. I...
We use Cisco at work and I like its robust build. POE+ in case I have a higher power requirement. Would like the 10GB uplink, but depends on the price I can find. Would like up to 3 switches as I expand. VLAN, GB ports, as you know many features. A great bang for the buck and if I can get 24P-E...
Good inputs; thanks. In the next design iteration I will do a better job of addressing blind spots and redundancy. And will overlay the rudimentary triangles on the aerial map.
There are a lot of cameras though, not by choice. In noticing some of the automatic washes around town, they have a lot...
