It was set to auto. I figured it out - went to exposure and moved the slider on exposure comp from 50 (default) to 100, then back to 50, and now camera is exposing properly - guess the exposure was way too low and didn't automatically adjust as it got dark, for some reason.

Nope, make your own. Take that metal plate, mark and place some small pilot holes in there and toss in some self-tapping machine screws to mount your cameras. Drill a hole large enough for your camera cat5 connector to go through so it's in the box, place the side exit hole on your mount plate...
