I mounted the 4321 bullet above the 4231 turret today and found that the bullet does not have the sun washout problem. To make conditions more even, I removed the sunshade from the bullet. These are the same cameras with the same sensors in different cases. Following through on a prior suggestion I'll try swapping their positions tomorrow, and if the washout stays with the turret I'll start jumping to conclusions. Answering another question, I do not see any IR bleed. Today's pictures below. I'm embedding just the thumbnails.

Wow, Has anybody else had this issue ? Quite the difference..Glad you posted this because I was thinking about purchasing a few of the fixed lens units.

I also have this issue with my SD-49225T-HN when the lens hits the sun at just the right angle...not much you can do about it. I have several of the IPC-HDW4231EM-AS and have no issues at all but mine are aimed downward not at sun. I would chalk this up to a bad placement of cam situation.

I would too if other cameras mounted less than a foot away didn't have the image washed out. It's not a sun in the FOV issue, which wipes our the image on all my cameras. This is the sun outside the FOV. The camera points southwest and right now the picture washes out from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. I'm just trying to understand what makes one camera behave differently than the others. Tinman, does the audio work on your IPC-HDW4231EM-AS cameras?

The glass is the issue. Keep in mind that glass has a lattice like structure. When the light hits it right it will reflect around internally to the glass. I've got two 4231EMs up and have no problems, and one is on the east side of my house and gets really bright sun in the morning, especially. There's an SV3C on the same side and it washes out or about two hours every day. Just the luck of the draw, in a way, I guess.

inspired by the suggestion of a hat, I designed and built a sunshade that should win an industrial design award and/or beauty contest. Probably not a surprise that it helps a lot. In fact, when the lens is shaded the turret's image is all of a sudden better than the unshaded bullet's image, because the bullet has a small amount of glare that I didn't realize was there. And thinking about the glass structure, I tried rotating the camera upside down and on its side, which didn't change anything. Andy is going to see if he can get any helpful response from Dahua. I think the answer will have to come from somebody who knows about construction and material differences between the turret and bullet. It could even be something like glass from different vendors randomly being used in the manufacturing process.

A more carefully constructed sunshade has fixed the sun glare problem I have with this camera. I'm hoping it continues to do the job as the sun angle changes later in the year. The raw material was a Campbells soup can. I found several other metal and plastic containers about the same diameter and chose to use this one. On my no-audio problem, after taking the camera apart and putting it back together, the microphone now works. Maybe this problem will come back, and maybe it won't. If the bullet version of this camera had a microphone I'd strongly recommend it instead. If audio is important, the choice is tougher. Additionally, my HDW4231EMP-ASE is 6mm. A sunshade with the 3.6mm version might not work out.

I have several of these but one has started locking up. I will go to view camera picture and it will freeze on a picture from hours before . When I click it says searching for video and then times out.

Looks like water creeped in and corroded pins on camera pigtails

Looking for the IPC-HDW4231EM-AS or similar with a 2.8mm lens. Does Andy carry these?
I have a couple with the 3.8mm, this one would go in a damp barn/shelter under an eve that is somewhat exposed so it would have to be weather proof and the wider vision would cover the area nicely. Don't need anything fancy with on-board storage or 4k but night vision is a must.
Been trying to decide which of my current cameras I could steal and move to this location... but they are all well placed and would like to keep them where they are, so I guess I'll have to just bite the bullet and buy another one.
Excellent cameras!

The 2231 might be the replacement you are looking for.

Then 2231 is fine, but don't really have any use for the memory card fixture or varifocal lens. Not really anywhere in particular to point, just to cover a general area, unless I went to a PTZ but not willing to spend that much just to see if there is a deer behind the barn.. :)
Could always trade locations though with a cam location that could use a varifocal lens, so this might be a good option.

Hmmm... Somehow I missed this camera all along. This, with the 3.6mm lens, might be just about perfect to cover that corner where the back of the garage meets the back of the house.
