regular consumer grade UPS's like the typical BackUPS 600 kind of stuff, I've always been worried that the charger circuit can't handle the current load of charging a big battery. the middle and larger sizes of SmartUPS that have the external battery pack options can. just be sure to string enough batteries together in series to get the right voltage, like I said, 4 x golfcart 6V for a 24V system, that would provideo 24*220AH == 5280 watt*hours, but really shouldn't be discharged below 50% for best battery cycle life. Golf Cart batteries (typically GC-2 size, aka T105) are true deep cycle, unlike the more common 'marine/rv' 12V stuff which is a hybrid starter battery. and with lead-acid, series is always better than parallel, as it ensures all batteries see the same current load charging and discharging.
