Getting the hang of it

So, I'm building a small micro-atk NVR system for Blue-iris and wanted to get feedback on processors, specifically the importance of hyper-threading. Ultimately I will have about 12 cameras.

I'm currently looking at either an i5 9600k but I'm concerned about the loss of hyperthreading and if going with an 8600k would be better? Maybe bump up to 9700k or 8700k?

Thanks.

Go with the most modern i7 you can afford, but make certain that the CPU you select supports BI video acceleration.

Well, my main question was about hyperthreading. The 9th gen processors no longer have hyperthreading, Intel dropped the feature. So I'm trying to decide if that will impact performance significantly or not, all other things being equal. I'd also prefer to not go with a 9700k which is north of $400 bucks if an i5 9600k at $260 will do just fine....

Decisions decisions.

I seem to remember reading that recently.

If Intel no longer supports Hyper-threading do you think developers will continue to support it? And if developers no long support it do you think Ken will continue to support it on BI?

I believe they just moved hyperthreading to the "new flagship" their 9th gen i9. Follow Q's advice, Cliff Notes, or any of the other "buy vs build" threads you will be fine.

Please do some research on "buy vs build" BI computer selections on this forum before building one, unless you just got money to burn buying a refurb will be cheaper than building something (speaking from personal experience).

I understand the cost/performance stuff very well. My main question was specifically related to the impact of hyperthreading on BI performance and nothing else. I have an extra system that does not have a CPU hence my question.

To reiterate, maybe more simply, would an 8th gen with hypthreading outperform a 9th gen without all other factors being equal (core count, etc).

There could be other factors such as the memory leak issue on 8th gen (if it's still any issue), etc.

Thanks :)

I ended up going with a 9700k in this build for a couple reasons. I decided to have this box double as an HTPC and living room gaming PC. Certainly an overkill CPU for an NVR. Ultimately I'll source a less power hungry system for the NVR after I'm all settled into the new home and other priorities are done first. The 9700k is of course doing great and after a couple weeks of uptime I see no memory leak issues on Windows 10.
