You’ve misinterpreted what I wrote. That wasn’t “mockery” or ”sarcasm” in the least. Rather, being personally unaware (and surprized) that the Fed had previously dropped rates every time someone “got the sniffles” I suggested that a citation (showing that the Fed had previously cut rates when “someone got the sniffles“) was in order. So, no, I don’t agree.
I wasn't referring to you, I don't remember you mocking, but there has been plenty of it in this thread.

I thought you meant you were unaware that the rate was dropped due to the virus, hence the links.

Yes, technically the cut was to ward off economic downturn, but it's related to the virus. My point was that there a lot of serious consequences related to this virus that the flu does not cause. Too early to tell.

This is a very good thing.

I had blood drawn at LabCorp last Wednesday (01/29/20). This particular LabCorp office had posted a sign on their front door asking that clients who were experiencing flu-like symptoms blah...blah...blah. I don't recall precisely what it said but I remember noting that they seemed ahead of the game. However, I purposely sneezed on it as a practical demonstration that I resist group-think and societal-lemming-panic. smiley17.gif

Commercial diagnostics labs are set up appropriately for blood Borne pathogens. Coronavirus in blood samples isn't something that needs BSL3.

We have a confirmed case in South Africa. Won't be long before it's in my neck of the woods. Cape Town has one major public hospital and less than a handful of smaller, ill-equipped hospitals servicing more than 4.5 million people. When Black Friday became a 'thing' in South Africa around 2016, people were fighting over the last rolls of toilet paper. Looks like we might be up a certain creek and fresh out of paddles.

From both sides. Pretty big cut considering they were meeting soon anyway. Do they know something we don't? Numbers aren't in on either side on this one, but I'd agree with the others. Dismissing it as the flu at this point is irresponsible unless you know something that the world's governments do not.

Mockery and sarcasm towards someone else's scepticism could be taken as a form of "name calling", wouldn't you agree?

Pure speculation below:

Agree the hurried Fed cut as well as other government and big private industry “precautions” and preparations are welcome but would seem premature ... until you remember that the first cases in China have now pretty certainly been traced back to the first part of December. We don’t hear about, and maybe they truly didn’t know they had, a really big problem for what? 30+ days later?

So the coming week or two may bring more widespread bad news in the US and perhaps the folks who know more than us are anticipating the next big shoe to drop.

Hope they’re (and I’m) wrong.

A patient at our university hospital was tested positive today for COVID-19. I found the news to be dangerously close to me. It really sucks when others around you are not covering their faces when they're sneezing and coughing everywhere.

What further sucks is how we're inadequately prepared to combat this virus. Masks are in short-supply. Only patients complaining of cough and fever are being provided masks. Telemedicine is leading the way. Otherwise, patients skip the ER and go right into isolation.

When you see these guys running around in their hazmat suits and masks spraying disinfectant - what are they using Lysol - Chlorox- Alcohol? Could this be made at home to kill off the virus?

President Trump said he believes people infected with the novel coronavirus may get better "by sitting around and even going to work." Apparently its not as bad as everyone is saying.

Hi @tng5737

Those all can help kill the virus.

Rubbing Alcohol - at least 70%

It's almost crazy to hear when the director of the NIH states that the risk is low and that the infection is "community-acquired," this only encourages people to move around in public spaces even more.

NBC Report, one journalist states landing at JFK's International Airport, coming from Northern Italy and the DHS and other personnel not asking passengers if they traveled to infected areas

Some are going to say this is politically-driven, others will say there is some other motive, or simply lack of commonsense.

Completely fine with that :p But there seems to be a lot of drama and less action in the works. This is going to come to an individual level where we all need to do the responsible thing. Nobody should be telling you not to buy a mask. At this point, your health will precede everybody else's. You gotta do what you gotta do. It shocks me when a professor / spokesperson tells us no reason to buy a mask when the viral particles are so small that they can pass through; shows where your qualification is at. First of all there are two types of masks being distributed, surgical masks and N95 masks. The N95 masks are for both preventative and infection measures. This special mask is widely used in the construction business especially when it comes to asbestos abatement. The N95 masks consists of multiple layers to ensure proper filtration and protection are being given to yourself as well as others, to contain the spread. Now no mask is 100% perfect but at least gives you some peace of mind knowing the risks out there. You will come across people that self-contradict especially infectious disease specialists, and institutional professors themselves. Buy all the Hand Sanitizer and Disinfectant Sprays and Wipes you need. This pattern is only going to get more prevalent in the days, weeks, and months ahead. I'm not hyping this up.

Another rate cute is calculated to be in the books....
