Newbie Questions NVR: Continuous Recording Scheduling

I just received my DS-7608NI-I2/8P and began playing a bit with it.

Under the Storage=>Schedule Settings=>Recording Schedule that seems to be the ability to define the time of day to apply Continuous record or Motion recording, etc. Is there any guidance regarding when you might close continuous recording? In my case the commercial property is a Church.

Also, what is the behavior NVR behavior when the HDD becomes full? Are older recording automatically deleted?

I've got the same NVR. With using Motion only you may miss some activity that you want to capture - say someone walks up to a window and then stops to look through it, the NVR will stop recording. You can set the pre and post recording time lengths longer which can help with that situation. If you set the motion sensitivity high you'll get a lot of false triggering from trees/ bushes blowing in the wind, shadows (even at night), car headlights and many other things you probably hadn't even realised the camera would detect as motion. Set it lower to avoid those items (or deselect that area for detection) and you will sometimes miss activity of interest. I've got Motion alerts (with "Notify Surveillance Centre" selected) set up on my NVR, with it set to "Continuous" in the recording schedule.

On playback I can choose to watch everything (blue Continuous line) or select the "Smart Events" (intermittent green line) and just play back the events the camera/ NVR determined could be genuine activity of interest. You've probably already noticed the green "Smart" playback underneath your red Motion events on the playback screen. If something has happened that the Motion/ Smart event missed I can scan through the continuous footage to find it.

PS: The 2x speed option is blanked out on my playback screen in Smart Event, but it can be selected to skip through at faster speeds by using the remote control.

Thanks. So what does "Surveillance Centre" mean in the Hikvision context? Is this the NVR?

Regarding the NVR unit, what functions can only be performed from the console (i.e., by connecting a monitor/keyboard/mouse) vs being performed remotely (e.g., via browser connection to IP address of NVR). I am trying to determine whether I should bother getting a monitor for the NVR.

You really do need to hook up a laptop (or PC) to the NVR. Depending on the firmware you're running there are various important settings on the cameras that you can't access via the NVR.

I don't know why they do it that way. The whole idea I had with buying an NVR was to have the system totally disconnected from my home network. I've now got a laptop plugged into one of the spare POE ports and can directly access the camera set up pages that way. If you've got all Hikvision cameras you can enable the NVR to give you access via the NVR's LAN port. See Hitting cameras web pages with a laptop in an NVR with POE

Actually I was asking whether there are things that can only be done by connecting a keyboard to the NVR USB port (and monitor the NVR HDMI port) vs opening a browser connection to the IP address of the NVR.

It seems you are indicating that some camera settings only configurable via browser access to the camera, which is also good to know.

Okay, so you're already logging in via a PC over a network to do everything? You need to do it that way to access all the camera settings. I actually haven't investigated the if the NVR settings vary between the network and directly accessing the NVR using it's keyboard/ display. I normally do it all directly on the NVR using the mouse and HDMI output.

If you enable the 'Virtual Host' facility on the NVR (web GUI | Configuration | Network | Advanced Settings | Other tab | tickbox
you have direct access to the web GUI of cameras connected to the PoE ports via the links in the right hand column of the Camera Configuration page. Full access to all configuration settings is then possible.
There is no need to have any wired connection to a spare NVR PoE port.
And if you want full network access to the PoE port connected cameras (eg connect another NVR to the cameras) that's possible by adding a static route to your LAN router/gateway and having the correct default gateway setting on the cameras.
Quite a few posts on Virtual Host and methods of direct access that don't require wiring.

Does the "default gateway" parameter in the cameras refer to the IP Router on the LAN or is this the IP address of the NVR?

For simple camera configuration - the Virtual Host facility is pretty good and needs no changes to the camera networking settings.

Neither -
For a NVR PoE-port-connected camera to be able to pass traffic outside the IP address segment it is on (by default 192.168.254.x) it needs to be configured with a default gateway on the same network segment.
When a camera has been configured automatically by the NVR Plug&Play facility, the default gateway is set to be that of the NVR LAN interface default gateway, usually the LAN router/gateway address. This is not accessible to the camera, so no traffic can flow outside the 192.168.254.x segment the camera is on.
For camera traffic to flow outside the IP segment they are on, the default gateway needs to be set to the IP address of the NVR PoE interface, usually 192.168.254.1

OK, so the NVR acts as an IP router whose default subnet = 192.168.254 (all subtending cameras on the PoE interfaces of the NVR are on this subnet).

So a camera connected to the PoE ports on the NVR is not directly reachable from the LAN-side of the NVR (except via the Virtual Host facility provided by the NVR), unless the camera's default gateway is set to 192.168.254.1. Is that correct?

Correct, you've got it. Assuming that there is a known route to the 192.168.254.0 network via the NVR LAN interface, conveniently provided by a static route on the LAN gateway/router.
Example, Hikvision 7816 NVR on 192.168.1.210, PoE-conected Hikvision camera on 192.168.254.11:

I have the same NVR as the thread starter and i don't get the motion detection to be displayed on the playback mode of the NVR (green lines in the web browser bottom)...all i see is the blue line for continous recording Motion detection and "notify surveillance center" is activated in the NVR settings.

Do you have an idea how to get the green timeline be displayed? Thanks!!!
