I remember having 2400 baud modems back in the day and being jealous of everyone with 9600 baud modems when playing text-based games...then five or six years later, paying $200 for a 28.8K modem on an ISA card.

I probably still have an external 56K modem buried in an old laptop bag somewhere.

Damn, does the POTS still exist?

I've been thinking about getting a dialup modem sound sample to use as a ringtone. At the moment I'm using "Idiot Wind" for all the spam calls that I get and ignore.

I remember (ahem) heard some stories of not having enough serial ports for external devices... then it was not having enough ISA slots for internal cards

With Starlink internet available in most of North America now, and a number of decent cellular options in a lot of areas, I think those companies with ancient wired infrastructure are going to really have trouble keeping customers.

I believe that POTS lines will be gone, officially, by the end of August this year. 9K6, heck that was blazing fast after using a 300 baud modem.
