Just wondering, how do I know the NVR I get will be compatible with the IP Hikvision cameras I buy?

Do certain NVR's only work with certain models?

I have a rough idea of what cameras I want, but when it comes to NVRs its very confusing.

I think all Hikvision NVRs should work with Hikvision cameras for the rudimentary function of recording etc. It's the more specialised features/functions you need ensure are compatible/available if you want to be able to use them.

My advise (as someone who is relatively new to this too) would be:
  • Get international version NVR & cameras not Chinese firmware hacked versions. As well as being to updated firmware properly you'll ensure no region mis-match problems.
  • Ensure NVR is capable of recording at resolution you want (i.e if you buy 4K cameras and want to record at that resolution the NVR will need to be capable of it)
  • Don't mix and match camera/nvr brands
Hikvision NVRs seem to have 3 main model ranges: E= entry level, K = mid-range and I = business/pro series. I found this graphic useful for deciphering models:

It seems some features are tied to the model range, i.e I was looking into playback transcoding the other day and found out that it's only available on the I-series NVRs.
