its 2017, you never need crossover cables, throw them out..

Hi @fenderman I am trying to connect my laptop to the NVR so that I can try and access my camera (vi browser) using the x.x.254.xx address do you know if this is possible and if you could share basic steps.

Enable Virtual Host, then you won't need to mess with any cabling.
Network Configuration, Advanced Settings, Other - tickbox.
