Hi,

I've a very specific requirement for recording 4MP @ 50FPS and synchronous playback of upto 4 channels. I'll be using iDS-2CD7146G0-IZS camera, and I've been suggested DS-7608NI-I2 NVR by my local Hikvision rep. But I can only see the below specs under decoding of the NVR:
  • Synchronous Playback8-ch
  • Decoding Capability1-ch@32 MP (30 fps)/2-ch@12 MP (20 fps)/4-ch@8 MP (25 fps)/8-ch@4 MP (30 fps)/16-ch@1080p (30 fps)

Says 4-ch@8 MP (25 fps), how do I be sure that it does 4 MP (50fps)?

thanks!

The first question is what is the specific need for this unnecessary FPS for surveillance cameras?

These types of cameras are not GoPro or Hollywood type cameras that offer slow-mo capabilities and other features. They "offer" 30FPS and 60FPS to appease the general public that thinks that is what they need, but you will not find many of us here running more than 15 FPS; and movies are shot at 24 FPS, so anything above that is a waste of storage space for what these cameras are used for. If 24 FPS works for the big screen, I think 15 FPS is more than enough for phones and tablets LOL.

If your unique case requires that type of FPS, you will find surveillance cameras are not going to meet your needs and you need to get a camera capable of that - or spend some serious money.

We have had recently people come here after purchasing cameras in two instances where they were wanting 60FPS - one was a tennis club and another was a youth soccer club. In both cases they found that these types of cameras were not capable of what they were wanting to do. Sure the cameras could run faster FPS, but it still didn't provide them with the level of detail they were looking for. I recall the soccer club had a decent quality PTZ that is fine for a residential or retail/commercial installation, but to cover the action of the soccer field it wasn't capable of meeting their needs. And because of the extremely fast motion, it was creating a halo type effect around the action (which can be seen in certain lighting conditions). These cameras are good, but not good enough to catch the rotation of a ball for example.

Shutter speed is much more important than FPS for surveillance activities.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying, and I've advised the customer against using these cameras as well but somehow they are insistent.

Customer is a NGO, and they want to do medical research by capturing facial & body expressions. They would make clips & upload to some 3rd party AI software.

Yeah, they would probably be better off with cameras intended for that purpose. They will lose a lot in buying cameras intended for surveillance that are rated for outdoors, have infrared, etc. and instead have the cost of those items put into better sensors in a camera intended for their use. Heck GoPro would probably be better LOL.

Regarding facial recognition, keep in mind that most of us have found that facial recognition is more gimmicky and novelty than anything else. If you have to put in 5 or 10 or 15 or 35 pictures of yourself in system for it to recognize it is you...then you shouldn't expect much.... My success rate was under 5% so I moved on to other things LOL.

It can work in certain situations like a business that requires everyone to stop in front of the camera and the camera is at head height. Outside of that, the percentage of being accurate is probably not going to be super high. Especially someone coming to a front door.

Unless you spend the big bucks that casinos and airports have LOL.

Heck even in ideal situations like a business with the camera at ideal height and optimal lighting it fails....

Thanks again ! some great points and courage for me to say no to the customer.

Actually, they do not need any VCA features of the equipment, its just FHD / 60 FPS / built in mic is what they needed. They wanted to capture all 4 sides of the face in a very small observation space of 5x5m. They would then upload the video to some software for analysis. Initially the requirement was much more, like auto tracking etc which we said is not possible.

The idea of GoPro is also very enticing. Any more bright ideas ? :p

I think any DSLR type camera would do the job as well.

Surveillance cameras are great at what they do, but most of the time they won't get individual hairs, facial stubble, crows feet, laugh lines, etc. Some of those characteristics may be needed by your client in capturing the nuances of a facial expression. So a true camera that doesn't have to deal with all the other conditions surveillance cameras have to account for will probably be the better option. Maybe it is GoPro or maybe it is a different camera.
