cam-it.org forum

I noticed that too. I'm not sure what's going on there. Keep getting a "Connections problem" error. Maybe Dwayne decided to shut it down.

I hope not, that was a good forum.

It was mismanaged IMO. At one point it had a moderator who made it his business to comment on many of the posts telling members what was wrong with their posts and how they should post in the future. He also seemed to have an obsession with trying to force all posts of like topics into one huge mega-topicalicious post (e.g., "Slow CPU"). At one point in time the owner issued a directive forbidding members from using American slang (e.g., "heckuva"). I believe that one of the reasons ipcamtalk.com was founded may have been it manner in which cam-it.org was managed. It isn't forums which are good, it's the members (and the manner in which a forum is managed) that make a forum good...or bad. Users will find a way; if cam-it.org closes then its members will find their way here and -- IMO -- here is a heckuva lot better than there ever was.

Most web sites, when shut down, are just gone. Unresponsive, or replaced with a domain-parking page covered in advertisements. This is probably the result of a hardware failure or configuration problem.

Agreed. His domain is good until late Jan of 2016, and it just appears his db is down. Sometimes there are issues on the hosting side too, which can be quickly sorted.

The forum's admin "Dwayne" has issues with the site. I also know his Father passed away last week and the forum will be back online, family matters first.

Despite its issues it was a decent forum. Well two or three weeks ago it was getting spammed with porn posts and there seemed to be no admin in sight.

Fortunately (for me anyway) I ended up here because I got frustrated having to enter the captcha and answer questions when doing a search (I was only a guest). I think if you joined and did 5 or 6 searches or posts the captcha requirement went away but I never bothered to join.

I like both cam-it and IPCT. I have to say that I'll miss cam-it if it shuts down. I'm used to visiting both forums every morning while having a cup of coffee before breakfast. There's a whole lot more activity here though. :)

Great! Thanks for letting us know.

I'm not going to miss it. The guy who ran that place wanted to control every member's behavior, a requirement which was not compatible with my American cultural heritage: Live free or die mofo.
