What's most unfortunate about this, is the markup on this maybe unethical, and immoral, but not illegal. If someone sold apples for $100 a apple, and people are dumb enough to pay it, it is what it is. I can see how someone who was just made a victim of a home burglary, or even worse, robbery would be a easy target to pitch this to. Some people would jump on it just so they can feel normal again and be able to sleep at night knowing they gained back some "control" of their life.
All that said, I worked in sales for multiple companies when I was younger, and most major companies who were in it for the long haul, knew to stay competitive, they could only charge about a 35% to 40% markup on products. I don't know how they came to this "magic" number, but I just noticed this is all what they had, and these were billion dollar companies with thousands of stores across the nation.
For me personally, I am a Christian, that does not make me perfect, and I am far from it, but I try to incorporate God's teachings into my life. This is what the bible talks about in this matter:
Proverbs 11:3 - "The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them"
Proverbs 19:1 - "Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool"
Proverbs 16:8 - "Better is a little with righteousness Than great income with injustice"
Proverbs 21:6 - "The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue Is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death"
Jeremiah 17:11 - "As a partridge that hatches eggs which it has not laid, So is he who makes a fortune, but unjustly; In the midst of his days it will forsake him, And in the end he will be a fool"
I am not trying to get all preachy on anyone, these are just some of the ways I personally choose to live my life with a guilt free conscious as far as how I conduct business with others.
