Blue Iris/Deepstack not detecting motion at night

Hi,

I set up Bi and Deepstack on my BI5 server. Everything seem to work satisfactorily during the day, as far as detection of motion. At night, it is not detecting anything.

The last few nights I have had an issue with a vagrant/stalker coming up to my house and casing entry points/walking around the house. Last night he came up and hid behind a tree for 5 minutes before walking up to my front door, ringing the doorbell and asking if someone lived here that has NEVER lived here (I didn't open the door).

BI/deepstack did not detect any of that. There were no recordings made of the incident, except the low resolution recording because of my continuous recording + triggered setting.

I have deepstack set at 30% confidence level.

I am not using IR on my cameras, instead I have that turned off because they work well in color during low light conditions, and I have floodlights on all night around my house currently.

Any help would be much appreciated. I would really like to be able to detect motion at night.

Thanks

Are you running the dark.pt model? Many of us have found the default model doesn't work very well at night.

But if you are recording continuous+triggered, then you should have mainstream recording still in your video?

Hi,

I didn't know there was a dark.pt model until just now. I'll look into it.

As far as mainstream, I played the clip back and it was very low quality. It was the sub stream recording that I was watching on playback for sure. Not sure where to look for the high quality version. It would really help the cops out to try to identify this weirdo that is stalking us.

Thanks for your help and the tip about the dark model.

Here is the dark model:

If it didn't record mainstream, then it must not have been triggered, so that would go back to your motion settings.

Post some screenshots of your night field of view and the screenshots of your night BI motion settings.

Here are some snapshots of that particular cameras field of view (note that this is the low quality substream):

As for the motion settings, I just analyzed the video with the motion detector and the motion detector would have recorded this, if I wasn't using deepstack. Motion Settings:

Oh wow that should have got it - what camera brand?

Post a screenshot of your BI Camera status that shows things like FPS/KEY, bitrate, etc.

I would also make a zone A of the entire field of view and then in object detection but in A

It's an amcrest IP5M-T1179EW-28MM. I have three of them.

This is shameful to admit, but could it also be my obsolete computer? Its an intel core i7-3770s and 16gb ddr3 ram.

So do the FPS match the iframes? Is the KEY 1.00?

It sounds like you are running substreams and have done every optimization in the wiki?

The only thing the older PC would have done would be possibly cancel out DS for taking too long, but it would have still switched to mainstream if you are recording cont + triggered.

Have you looked in the alerts to the left and opened up the folder and tell it to show cancelled alerts?

What CPU% are your running?

Substreams are running and at the same framerate as mainstream.

CPU is at a comfortable 5-10%

I have not told BI to show cancelled alerts. I will do that now.

Night detection, both BI and DeepStack, is a horse of another color. Contrast and brightness are crucial for BI or DS to see things and DS, even with the dark model, is even more sensitive to brightness and contrast. It may take some time to get those settings just right, and even then it's a compromise because of the different lighting characteristics from night to night, a bright moonlit night versus a cloudy rainy night for example.

Do I need to make a night schedule just for the dark.pt model? Or do I just run the command in the documentation on github?

I would suggest a night schedule so that you are not running the dark 24/7.

And you do not run the command from github.

You create a c:\deepstack\MyModels folder and put it in there.

Thank you for your help!!

If you guys are interested to know about the vagrant/stalker that was in the picture, that has been visiting me for a few nights now, and doing weird stalker stuff... The captain of the sheriffs office paid me a visit to let me know the guy is actually a neighbor down the street that is becoming more mentally ill by the day. Apparently he believes that Martha Hunt, who is a Victoria's secret model, lives in my house. And some porn stars too. He believes that he is going to "have offspring" with the women that live here in his head. :idk:

So I got to get this thing working because their intel source says he will be looking to impregnate these fine, fine hunnies that live here again tonight. They are going to get him some help but they want to get him with more than trespassing.

Their intel is coming from his Facebook which i am fervently trying find

WOW do you have a crazy LOL. At least they know who he is now!.

But the dark.pt won't work if BI isn't triggering first, so as soon as it gets dark, walk around out there and see if it will trigger for you. That is the first issue we need to fix.

The first thing I'd do is switch the recording to full resolution until you get night motion detection working properly.

The next thing I'd do is make sure I have something handy that would add some small amount of weight to this guy should he break in, like say just add 125 grains at a time or maybe an ounce at a time depending on what you're comfortable with.

Yeah, he’s absolutely insane!!

I did walk around and I am getting triggers and alerts again. It is satisfactory but I think it should be doing better. It will work for tonight. I also have a few trail cams in strategic places so I’ll get him on camera one way or another. That’s all the sheriff needs is a couple more photos.

I will be tuning this starting tomorrow night. Thanks again for the help!

I took your advice and made switched the front yard/front porch to main stream. Thanks.

I got a little friend for this guy if he decides to go full psycho. If it comes to that I’ll decide depending on the circumstances if I use that or if I pepper spray his dumb little face and then hit him with the taser for 5 seconds over and over until the sheriff gets here. It takes about 15-20 minutes for response from the sheriff too.

play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
