I've been looking at this cube camera's and comparing specs but still confused- whats the difference between the two and which is better ?:

DS-2CD2421G0-I(D)W

DS-2CD2423G0-IW

DS-2CD2423G0-IW

I spot one right off by the "D" suffix on the DS-2CD2421G0-I(D)W meaning it is powered by 12 VDC from a Ø5.5 mm coaxial power plug and does NOT work with POE.

The other model, the DS-2CD2423G0-IW , operates on 12 VDC as well or PoE (802.3af, class 3)

Generally, if you have to run power to it you might as well use POE and not depend on the wireless (W) operation....so I'd consider that if you see no other difference in sensor size, lens focal length, etc. between the two that you find in the specs you linked.

I don't think that is correct , both models have PoE
Unless the specs the OP linked are wrong, the "D" suffix implies no POE, as shown below:

DS-2CD2421G0-IDW_No-POE.jpg DS-2CD2423G0-IW_with-POE.jpg

Power Supply
12 VDC ± 25%
PoE: 802.3af, Class 3

According to spec sheet it is PoE
As I stated in post #6 above, you have to look at the model numbers, including the "D" suffix.....

Like Lily of AT&T says, "It's not complicated."

Nope.
It's clear, for the D variant :
DS-2CD2421G0-IW:
12 VDC ± 25%, Ø5.5 mm coaxial power plug; PoE (802.3af, class 3)
DS-2CD2421G0-IDW:
12 VDC ± 25%, Ø5.5 mm coaxial power plug
DS-2CD2421G0-I:
12 VDC ± 25%, Ø5.5 mm coaxial power plug; PoE (802.3af, class 3)
