Okay, I was hoping this software was user friendly, but it won't even install.

I got the following error message below, so I did a manual install of IIS as it said, then tried installing the software again and still get the same message even with IIS installed.

So I have no clue why or what to try next.

Maybe this software is very particular and only works on some systems and not others. (I use Windows 10)

I'm not sure if this will help but did you try rebooting the computer between the installations?

Thanks, It didn't ask me to reboot after installing the IIS, but it did ask me to reboot when I took it back off.

Maybe I'll give it another try tomorrow with rebooting after installing IIS again but before reinstalling the milestone software, can't hurt to try, if that don't work I'll just have to try yet again to get iVMS-4200 fully functional.

Okay, I manually installed IIS again, rebooted, and tried installing the Milestone software again but still get the same error message saying IIS was not automatically installed and needed to be installed manually, even though it WAS already installed manually.

So unless someone has a solution that does not require uninstalling all the other software on my computer I'll just go back trying to get iVMS-4200 fully functional, even though it seems it is a challenge also, but at least I got it to install.

The iVMS-4500 on my windows phone works great, and the iVMS-4200 client works great on my computer for live views and manually recording video and taking snapshots, the only problem I have is that I not been able to figure out is why the iVMS-4200 can "see" my HDD to record to it manually, but when I try to set up the iVMS-4200 storage server so I can set up auto record when motion is detected it doesn't "see" my HDD.

I would be happy to keep using iVMS-4200 if I could only get it to see my HDD for auto record and not just manual record.

Okay, thanks for sharing that, I wish they had that info right on the download page to alert people before even getting started, I had to do a search to find that page - Milestone Systems product system requirements

(my Windows 10 Home version did have IIS available to install, and it did install though)

I guess Milestone expects only businesses to use it and therefore figures no users are going to be non-business at home users that use Windows 10 Home like I do.

I was initially under the impression the average private home user could use it, they could if they had a business level OS, but I would think the average home user is more likely to have Windows 10 Home.

Oh well, back to trying to figure out how to make iVMS-4200 fully functional.

Thanks again, at least I now know not to waste any more time with the Milestone business level software.

There are many home users with windows pro, pro is not limited to business use......milestone expects you to have a system with their minimum requirements...they have technical reasons based on the way the software is structured that requires pro ....they are giving you the software for free, you cant complain...The average home user can pic up a full pc that can easily run 8 cams on milestone for 75, windows pro included.

Please don't misunderstand, I do appreciate that they have a free version, so I'm not meaning to sound like I'm complaining, just mildly frustrated that I didn't know upfront that the Home version would not work, my fault, next time I'll try to remember to check minimum requirements first.

Milestone obviously expects users of their software to only be businesses though since the form they have you fill out has mandatory fields asking for your business name, ect. (I just put my personal name as I was not trying to pretend to be a business) They obviously don't seem to have a problem if a non-business downloads their software otherwise I would think they would require they verified you as a business before allowing you to download.

They dont expect anything...they simply use a standard form..you are making silly assumptions...

Think about it, they deliberately made "business name" a mandatory field instead of leaving it as optional, that is fairly obvious.

oh god, you are reading WAY too much into a standard for....if they wanted to limit to business use, they would put that into the license terms...just like others do to limit to home users....they have it mandatory because they want business users to enter it so they have the info...they understand that home users will just fill their names or something else in...

You could very well be right, it's not a big deal either way, it obviously does not hurt them if personal home users use it and could very well get them business clients if the home user recommends it to a business owner they know.

There are home users with more than 8 cameras you know...or that want additional features...
 
fenderman, might you admit that Milestone should have included a OS compatibility check in their installer, to prevent the scenario of frustrating and failed installations for users with incompatible OSs?

or that users could take the time to read the minimum specifications....milestone doesnt have to do anything for you..they are providing the software for free...its amazing how folks bitch and moan that the FREE stuff they get is not up to their needs...
 
I would argue that poor software design is poor software design, no matter how generous its author.

Yes, its terrible...dont use their free offering....use something else...please...nitpicking...some folks have a knack for it.
