Hi,

I have seen a good offer on a Dell 3268 (i5 7400) with 8Gb. Would it work well with Blue Iris?

I think the processor is good (from the guide on here) but it seems to only have one HDD bay. My plan would be to replace the DVD with an SSD, hooking up the DVD SATA connection to the spinning disk and using the primary SATA for the SSD.

would that work well or am I missing something?

thanks

Assuming you're speaking of the Inspiron (not Vostro) 3268, I think what you have stated sounds about right and should be OK if:
  • The price is right
  • Includes Windows 10 (allowing re-install on that SSD with the MS Media Creation Tool from a USB flash drive)
  • The motherboard is already unique to Dell so the not-so-powerful power supply also being proprietary shouldn't be a surprise
  • Install BI and BI's db folder on the SSD, video clips on the HDD.
  • Optimize the CPU for BI as stated n the Wiki

Thanks... It's definitely a Vostro... this is it:

Not getting it from there, this is just a reference

Looks good, maybe increase that RAM to 8GB after you get it / when you can.
External 65w power adapter will keep the internal temps down, should be able to increase to 90w easily if need be in future.

Oh well, failed to get that machine but got this one for cheaper...

Dell Optiplex 7040
Core i5 6500 @ 3.20GHz
12GB RAM
2TB HDD
+128GB mSSD
Win10

From what I see the 7400 and 6500 are pretty similar in performance.

I'd say that's a better deal.....RAM is already up from the other one's 4GB and you've got a SSD for Win 10, BI and BI's db folder....money saved! ;)

Actually first one had 8Gb (see first post, second one was just an example of what it was). Even so, more RAM, SSD etc... and cheaper!

Currently running on an HP DL380 (in a VM)... (Fenderman would throw me to the dogs, lol!) so hopefully it'll pay for itself in electricity savings :)
