Will this be enough CPU?

I'm thinking of replacing the laptop I use to run BI with a micro. Looking at the HP Pavilion Mini Desktop - 300-020.

The laptop is running 3 cameras now - all Foscam FI8910Ws @ 640x480.

I've purchased 4 Foscam FI9821Ps (1280x720). I'll be replacing the older 3 and adding a 4th.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with 6GB of ram and an Intel Pentium 2020M @ 2.40GHz. The new mini has an Intel Pentium 3558U @ 1.7 GHz. It only has 4 GB of ram, but it's upgradeable to 16GB.

cpubenchmark.net gives the 2020M a CPU Mark of 2306 and the 3558U a CPU Mark of 1790.

The laptop runs fine with the 3 lower res cameras. Anyone care to speculate if the step down in CPU and the step up in cameras will work?

Thanks.

I would not bother with the low power processor..for essentially the same price you can get a lower power consumption ultra thin hp

Also dell optiplex micro systems can be had for 300 with full 3 year warranties from the dell outlet when on sale (monthly)
If you dont mind slightly larger machines you can get them more readily..i just got a hp elitedesk small form factor with i5-4790 for 317- next business day warranty until august 2018.

I checked the specs on an Optiplex 3020. The CPU speeds are similar, but the GPU speeds are drastically different - see attached. I want to be sure before I pull the trigger. I'd like to get something that fits in with my A/V system. A micro actually looks like it could be a DVR or DVD. Right now, I'm running the laptop with the battery pulled so as not to burn it out.

I'm worried about the difference in resolution between the old and new cameras and the fact that I'm adding a fourth.

Thanks again.

You mentioned Dell Optiplex micros in your initial response. The Optiplex 3020 has an Intel Celeron G1840T Processor (Dual Core, 2MB, 2.50GHz w/HD Graphics).

The optiplex micro has many available processors.. Look at the i5. Also clock speed alone is not a valid comparison...

Fenderman was referring to the models with desktop i5 CPUs, which are every bit of three times faster than either CPU you were comparing above. Even the integrated graphics are likely to be much faster (but ignore the "GPU clock speed" since that is practically irrelevant when it comes to graphics performance these days). The trick is to buy the business-class machines used or refurbished for $300-$350 with at least two years of warranty remaining. They are the most cost-effective PCs you can find, and you can get them small enough to fit in a home entertainment center cabinet.

Thanks for the clarification you two.

The Optiplex series has the 3020, 7020 and 9020. Only the 3020 and 9020 have a "micro" model. The prices are $400 for the 3020 and $700 for the 9020. Thanks for the tip about Dell's outlet sales. I'll keep my eyes open.
