Hello after an heavy rainshower with very strong wind I noticed that my vto2000a was off and there was some water drops inside the camera plexiglass shield (see attached picture). The vto is still off...do i have to consider it as died or is there something that i could try to do? It seems that water infiltrated by the plexiglass camera shield...is that a common problem? Thanks for any help.

Disassamle and dry it. Use contact spray on all connector plugs.
This worked for me many times.
Do not let too much time pass, otherwise metal parts on the pcb board start to rust.

I have already disassembled and dried, it seems to have power (blu light in the front is on) but doesn't work.

Puh... that's bad. Did you succeed in removing it completely?
If you see LED light's are on, you can check the problem why it is not booting up. Therefor connect USB-UART converter to serial connector on board and watch startup procedure.

Sorry but I'm not that smart....I have no idea what USB-UART is. In any case I have to replace it because the main problem is that this intercom unit is ip54... Unluckily I didn't notice before purchasing.

Wauw, impressive that rain could have entered the housing. Now, IP54 is not "bad" as it should protect against 10l/min.
Are you sure that this is from rain and not condensation?
Did you install the VTO in a "protective" housing, eg I use a VTOB108 :

It "helps" protecting the camera, but it will not help you as the damage is already done.
Next time this happens: pour in dry rice (or some bags silica gel), it will absorb all the moisture and protect against rust.
Hopefully you'll get your VTO back up and running!

Probably it's ok for normal rain. Have you heard about recent flooding in Venice? I live not far from there and the rain was really heavy with strong wind. Anyway the vto is definitively dead...now I want to buy try the new vto2202, it's ip55 so should have a better rain protection.

For sure it wasn't condensation, it was soaking wet.
