1 - Camera firmware updates are a function of the camera, not a feature of BI.
2 - After the first year there is a support fee,if you want actual support. If you don't want support, don't pay the fee. Program updates can still be downloaded and applied legitimately until the version changes, IE 4.X.X to 5.X.X. If you're paying for support the upgrades are less expensive.

My opinion, the developer deserves the money. Pay the $30 per year, whether or not you ever use support. He's always working on updates.
