Sorry these are nest cams (I've since switched to IP Cameras and am now getting all of that configured). After the first event where we captured the teens getting into cars, my wife wanted more cameras. I am not complaining. The camera is actually located inside the house (since it is a nest cam) looking out of a 2nd story window. So the quality is a little off because the IR is disabled as it would reflect off of the glass back in to the camera. And the lighting there is a bit uneven due to the LED street light.

why dont you have anything capable of obtaining an ID? or you just like having a webcam of your front yard?

Yeah, now I'm running 2x Hikvision DS-2CD2042WD-I cameras at the moment. All feeding to BlueIris on a VM on my NASbox with 30TB+ of storage. Just trying to figure out cameras, settings, and positions. The IR range on them doesn't seem to be as good as advertised.
 
yeah those lil round IR diodes are pretty poor performers.. look at the led on the turret; that one is much better, just that one square diode outperforms all those dozens of round ones with ease.

be prepared to use additional lighting, night vision capabilities are way over-rated.. and adding more light is cheaper than cameras actually capable of seeing in the dark. there is some benifit to going with all external lighting too.

Have you informed your neighbors of this. Check the time because it will usually happen close to the same time every time. Our witching hour is about 1:30am and seems the active time for prowlers.
These kids you see live very close by no doubt. I see a great opportunity for a pellet rifle and scope sitting in that 2nd floor window. Inform your neighborhood.

Unfortunately the pellet Rifle, while a fitting punishment/deterrent, will just get us in trouble.

It is amazing how these thug miscreants can appear as cherubs when in front of a judge.

Oh yeah, both times the neighbors were alerted. The first time when there was 5 of them, they were all caught. But our neighbors didn't want to press any charges. These kids hit up A LOT of cars in the neighborhood. But our neighbors didn't really care. Their reasoning "There's nothing in the car to steal anyway."

Well, that's the other thing, the one kid which I know showed up each time had a felony charge of possession of a stolen firearm a week after the first video.
 
yep, totally expected.. if there was nothing in the cars to steal in the first place the kids would not waste there time and put them selves at so much risk just for some spare change floating around..

prowling cars has to be the least risky way to get your hands on a firearm.. alot less risk of getting your face blown off than trying to rob a pawn shop or invade someone's home.
 
Typically a bad idea to go outside to confront prowlers. You never know if there is more then one.
A perp on drugs such as this. Can make your day very bad.
Stay in the house, and call the popo.

And good grief people, lock your car doors. Every single time.
 
That's what amazed me. Multiple neighbors on our street said they left their doors unlocked. One even said she lucked out that they didn't find the $500 in cash in the car that she had forgotten in there.
 
ive been wondering if I could construct something like wrapping a tube around my spare keyfob, hooking it up to an air pump plugging the pump in and pressurizing the tube would press the lock button.. then I could just put it on a timer to turn on for 1min every night and double check everything is locked incase someone forgets.

kids are the biggest problem; never had the problem til I had a kid.. then when your unloading kids and groceries and trash and etc you simply forget..

Agreed, it could have been worse.

I did have an eye on my surroundings as you are correct, anyone could have been with him. Had he been aggressive I would have been justified, he complied, had he not and run off I would have let him go. He had no business going through my mail and what I though him beating on the garage was trying to break into the garage, which happens a lot.

Would I do all over again, yes I would. Hope to god there isn't a next time but never know. As I stated before, we now have a driveway gate so now you come inside it, all bets are off.

I also live in the 4th largest city in the world Houston, and in the innerloop so we see all kinds of stuff even though we are in an affluent area of town. I am very aware of my surroundings and try to get my wife to be aware also.

Yes and No, I am not one to sit around and watch anyone take my "stuff", so yes I will take my chances. I know plenty about Texas laws and prosecution, so not worried about any of the above.

its not even the my stuff thing that comes into play; I do the same thing if I see someone trying to take someone elses stuff.. the community overall is better off with these guys apprehended.

Some people are Sheep, Some people are Wolves, and other people are Dogs.. Your welcome to be a sheep if you want, by the time your shepard comes to the rescue the wolves will be long gone.

Didnt sound at all like he wanted to go out there and shoot anyone; property is not worth killing anyone over.. it was for his own defense; just incase.. but he was prepared to use it; otherwise dont take it.

Very true I just like being prepared and hope for the best in situations like I was put in. Unless I absolutely had to and had no other choice than to use my weapon to defend myself/property I will do it, no questions asked. As I said before had he run off, I would have let him go. Only force was necessary in this situation not deadly force.

On the other side of the garage is 16 911 vert Turbo, x5, 10K+ in bikes ect. so we have now gated it all in. If someone doenst take notice of the no trespassing sign and jumps the gate then all bets are off.

I am trying to put up as much as I can to be a deterrent, but still have to always be prepared for anything..
