I know Blue Iris is king here, but I am a Synology Surveillance Station user.

The cost of licenses for this thing is practically exceeding the cost for the cameras I am purchasing.

Silly question, maybe... Does anyone know if licenses can be purchased "used"? That is, if I find someone who is bagging their system, can I buy their camera licenses off of them?

Thanks!

You can migrate licenses that are purchased but not the default licenses on the device. The issue with used licenses numbers is that you dont know where they came from, if they were generated unlawfully or stolen they can be cancelled at anytime. You would need to get a great deal for it to be worthwhile.
One important thing to note about synology, each unit has a specific fps limit which will depend on resolution and codec. For example, while the $550 DS920+ boasts a 40 camera limit a deeper dive shows these limitations. So realistically if you ran 4k cameras at 15fps h265 you would have a 20 cam limit. The cheaper units naturally have lower capacities.

Total FPS (H.264)
1200 FPS @ 720p (1280x720)
1050 FPS @ 1080p (1920x1080)
600 FPS @ 3M (2048x1536)
360 FPS @ 5M (2591x1944)
200 FPS @ 4K (3840x2160)
