I have a good mic (on a line in to a cam) out front that I use for all my front yard cams, and one out back that I use for all my out back cams.

I do the same! Big difference between a quality mic & camera with built in mic. A couple other options:
  • run an analog mic feed into your BI pc, and embed onto any cam
  • send an analog mic feed into a compatible encoder, setup as a cam and share audio to selected cams

OP question 'record sound from multiple cams' - I agree with Ssayer, buy cams with builtin mics.
 
I have a few cameras where a microphone would be helpful. Is there a common weatherproof microphone that is known to work well with Dahua/Hikvision? I'm not sure I remember which of my cameras have microphone inputs.
