I really like this camera, which I believe is no longer available.

1/2.8” 2Megapixel progressive scan STARVIS™ CMOS
H.265&H.264 triple-stream encoding
50/60fps@1080(1920×1080)
2.7mm ~12mm motorized lens

Yep, and the -ZE is the latest iteration (version) of the popular 5231 model

see also 4mp starlights with 1/1.8" sensors.

Is there a consensus on the recommended 4MP versions and how they compare to the 2MP? I remember reading a few years ago 2MP was superior in most ways other than the raw resolution. Times have changed?

The perception varies but don’t chase behind megapixels, what you should be after is the lens size and rated aperture. If you need a varifocal turret the 2mp is the only option at the moment. Otherwise 4mp will be fine from a fixed lens perspective. Just make sure that you purchase the correct focal length for your application. Varifocal makes it easier to adjust focal length.

So if you are looking for a turret (eyeball) camera like the HDW5231R-ZE, there is a newer one that is a 4MP with a 1/1.8" CMOS which has been out since last May. However, it is fixed lens, not varifocal.

It is reviewed here===> Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

The 5231 series was the gold standard for quite a while in low light/ sub $200. The 5442 4MP with the new 1/1.8" sensor took that crown now. (IMHO)

If you absolutely need the best varifocal turret the 5231 takes the crown for the time being. If you absolutely need the best varifocal bullet camera, the 5442 takes the crown without a doubt. If you need best fixed lens (non-varifocal) camera, the 5442 is the one to go for. Note that the 5231 does not contain AI features.

I want order the ze , but I cant log in and register with aliexpress, always getting errors., and verification codes that google blocks out on my phone.
@EMPIRETECANDY how can I order this with you?

I have the same issue with AliExpress now. I figure it might be my ad blocker but I’m not turning it off for them.

FWIW it looks like there are two newer varifocal turrets that do a little better at night than the 5231.

The IPC-T3241-ZAS is the closest you will get to the 5231 in terms of features. It also has a AI, built-in mic, and costs a lot less with no compromise on build quality and specifications. :)

I thought you were interested in the 5231 :p Message Andy and see if he can cancel the order and send you out the T3241-ZAS instead. It can take "a while" for the 3241 to return back in stock due to the Coronavirus; only limited quantities were sold. The 5231 seems to be still in stock both on Ali-Express and his Amazon shop and still holds its reputation strong. :)
