The Remote Access Wizard in Blue Iris says to forward a port. Since we're not supposed to do that, how do I get remote access to work? Can someone point me to a thread or wiki or???

Most of us don't use the Remote Access Wizard.

We set up a VPN and VPN back into our own network.

This is a free VPN. Many routers have OpenVPN native to the router.

Paid VPNs are for illegal streaming and porno LOL

What about Stunnel? Is it ok to use that? I don't have access to my router - IPS provides an app to see what devices are connected but I don't seem to be able to do much.

I use ZeroTier and it is fine.

Should you decide to go with ZeroTier, here's a how-to video, attached below, courtesy of @Alaska Country:

Here’s his updated video with a correction:

I haven’t convinced myself all his settings are ideal—I have some that are set differently—but maybe his are.

But ZeroTier is an excellent solution. Just make sure to set BI to have a delayed start if you set it as to run as a service so ZT has time to configure the box’s IP settings.

I have 1 friend whom I monitor his BI system which is installed on Windows 11 home. About half the time BI service loads before Zerotier does its thing thus not allowing us to connect remotely. No problem on a couple other systems or with Tailscale.
Last night I found an article concerning this issue which I have not had a chance to try on their pc but it said to
run SERVICES.MSC from the command prompt, double click on Blue Iris Service and change Startup type from Automatic to Automatic (delayed)
which will allow a few seconds for Zerotier to fully load before Blueiris.

Yep, that’s what I just said above. (Thanks for taking the time to go into more detail.)

Does anyone use Wireguard?

Yes. Have Wireguard and OpenVPN running on pfSense. Works very well overall but one thing that doesn't on my iPhone is the on-demand function with BI. Doesn't seem to recognize that BI requires it. If you connect it manually or access something else like a browser first then it works fine. Just doesn't automatically startup when the BI app launches.
