Remote access for hikvision - hik-connect will only work on local wifi network

I've got hik-connect on my Android mobile, and a hikvision DS-7608NI running firmware V4.1.50 build 190108 (software updater on box says its the latest), with a hardwired connection to broadband.

Hik-connect can live view the cameras when my phone is on the local network by WiFi, but cant connect if I take it off the local network.

Any pointers to solve this?

I do not have a DDNS enabled - if thats the issue please suggest best free option.
