Recording audio outside of your home?

I've been trying for a while now and I still don't have an actual answer.

I'm installing cameras outside my house in NJ. Two of these will be 8 to 10 feet from a public sidewalk along what's basically main street in our town.

I see mixed information on audio recording under such conditions.

The feeling I'm getting is audio should be disabled on the cameras. But then I see other things that suggest maybe not.

Thoughts?

Bigredfish beat me to it. IANAL either, but there is no reasonable expectation to privacy on a public sidewalk.

However, New Jersey law does make an exception in cases of oral conversations where the person or people
communicating are doing so in an environment where they should not be under the expectation of privacy

FYI - I would also post a sign.. just to get some more legal coverage... next to any beware of dog signage
