PoE+ switch for 8 cameras?

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a PoE+ switch and I'm thinking I will use it to power 7 to 8 cameras. 8 if I decide on setting up a LPR cam and 7 if I decide against that. I don't think overall power consumption will be an issue as the cams each use less than 10W I believe. I just want the option for PoE+ as I will likely get a PTZ to play with.

I was looking at this TP-Link switch. 8 ports are PoE+. The other 8 are non PoE. I already have a 24 port switch for non PoE use.

This is another switch I was looking at. It has more PoE+ ports which is nice. I don't like that they are only 100mbps ports but will this even matter? I plan on mostly running 5231R-Z cams so doenst look they even have gigabit ports.

The Bv-tech POE switches have fans in them. Don’t know how loud they are however. Keep in mind the number of ports to the maximum wattage of each switch. Nelly’s Security has a true 8 port switch that can handle 30 watts for every port, 240 total. It is however a bit expensive at $180.00 plus shipping, with is also pricey.
 
I have this Linksys LGS116P. I believe I'm using all eight POE+ ports. Most are POE cams, but two have zoom which uses a few more watts and one IR illuminator needs POE+.

I purchased the IPCamPower IPCP-8P2G-AT 8 Port POE. Received it today and it was DOA. The power port on the back of the unit was defective. You could wiggle the cord and get power but let go of the cord and power was gone. The cord, quite short for my liking but replaceable. For a $200 switch, with shipping, not what I would call quality. I must admit I haven’t had much luck buying electronics lately. Another wasted week plus in getting my system up an running. Supplier attitude indifferent but professional, no problem with a return.

Well that sucks, I have 2 in service with zero issues. They are a standard 3 prong computer power cord, did you have a spare cord to try?
 
Ya I have six foot cords I recently purchased still a no go. You can tell there’s something wrong with the receptical portion where it’s secured to the metal box. It was very poorly packaged from the supplier and I’m sure it got bounced around a bit before it got to me. They except returns but it’s a hassle dealing with their system. READ EVERYTHING, my mistake. I missed the part about repair or defective catch in the return policy. I determined it was defective but if they can repair it they send it back to you automatically now you have two units if you purchased a second one, which I did. Don't use that opinion. Also trying to do the return on my iPad I think screwed things up a bit. Had to go to my desktop to complete the process. I’ll try and straighten all this out Monday.

One of the biggest reasons why I like to buy from amazon: if it's bad, they'll take it back ASAP (as long as it's 'fulfilled by amazon' and in the 30 day window) and pay for the return shipping!
 
Unfortunately TonyR you are so correct. I’ve never had a problem with Amazon. Eventually they will put many small businesses out of business. I have a feeling this companys customer’s are mainly professionals and not end users. I do love their tech support however. Guess it’s a trade off between sales and service for now.

Not sure why these aren't more highly favored here. They really are great switches and probably the most compact 16 port on the market. I have 2 of the lgs308p which is the 8 port version with all 8 ports being poe+. They've been flawlessly running for over a year now without any reboots. Great switch.

Me? I would have popped the top off and checked the soldering job on that socket. 5 minute fix if that was the cause.

Don't forget that, if you plan to connect 8 cameras to an 8 port switch you will not have any spare port to link the switch to the network, so will have no means of access ing the cameras. I know this is pretty obvious when you think about it but ...

Looney2ns I thought about taking it apart but as you know that would void the warranty. Plus it’s brand new and who knows what else is wrong with it.

RazorsEDGE I’ll take a look at that switch as long as it’s not managed.

HarveyB that’s way I chose this switch. Two seperate uplinks so you have all 8 ports available for cameras. There are cheaper options available.
 
If I'm not mistaken, you can add a PoE extender [the on that @nayr posted] (4-port) for additional ports, no?

Nothing wrong with them or the 16 port version but they've got a lousy power budget for a POE+ switch. As long as you just need a port or two of POE+ and mostly lower power draw devices for the rest then they're fine.

True, if you have a lot of devices with higher poe requirements you may run out of power. For 98% of situations it won't have any problems. I run 4 cameras and 2 cisco APs with plenty of budget left.
