Only able to power 4 IP cams on a switch with 90W of power. Tried multiple switches

I have 5 cameras plugged into a Zyxel GS1900-8HP switch (192.1.1.50 - 54) and for some reason only 4 cameras will power on even if I change in and out ports and cameras that are plugged in the switch. I have tried another switch with the same thing happening. I got my cameras from Andy and updated the firmware to the latest versions. What am I doing wrong?

You need to change the poe mode from classification to consumption. The switch is rated for 70w. When using classification mode it reserves 15w for each camera which is way more than they need.

I’m almost positive it’s on consumption but I’ll double check tomorrow to confirm

@EMPIRETECANDY Camera D2 192.1.1.51 randomly goes offline giving the “Can Not Find the Network Host” after being online and working for a number of hours. If I go reset the switch it works for a few hours before dropping offline again. Any ideas ?

Could be a cable issue, what brand? Solid copper? did you terminate 568B?

Update: I replaced the switch with a 120W Switch and have not had a issue since. Strange that 5 cameras could not be handled on a 70W switch.

what are you talking about? You can run 7 cameras (as long as they dont have heaters or using ptz all day) on that switch no problem. This is user error. Most cameras use 2 to 5 watts. Your cameras listed fall into that category when not actively using the varifocal which is not happening at the same time for all cams anyway.

The switch, you did not properly change it to consumption mode and save that setting. You have to hit apply AND also hit save on the top right.

Besides this hiccup. How do you like your Zyxel GS1900-8HP managed switch so far?

I have used the Zyxel GS1900-8HP for years now with no issues and with many different PoE devices. Its a good switch for $100 and Zyxel support has been really good. (Again this all depends on what you needs are for PoE so double check the switch has enough power for your situation)

But for some reason the switch would not power 5 cameras at once continuously. I am familiar with consumption/allocation modes on switches and I can assure you the switch was set to consumption mode. Still not sure why it didn’t work. I’m using a different switch 120W now with no issues. I will not disagree with @fenderman that it is a user error but what that is not exactly sure yet.

the switch will tell you the cameras actual power consumption.

Thanks. Yes it was set correctly in the web admin. The first go around you got me because I defaulted it and forgot to change it back. Any ideas what else could be causing that ? Bitrate or another camera setting ?

There is no camera setting that will make it use more power. See the actual power consumption reported by the switch.
