NVR vs NAS/PC for Multiple Monitor Setup

Hi there,

I'm going to install an IP security system at the house, (something like this costco one or an equivalent built out with Hikvision or Dahua cameras [TABLE="width: 64"]

I'm not someone who likes to carry his phone around in the house -- So I want to install three or so tablet type monitors in the house. My question is, will this put undue load on reasonably good Hikvision or Dahua NVR showing 6-8 4mp cameras? Would an NAS be a better idea to handle this load?

I am leaning towards the NVR for simplicity, although I worry that as I add to the system (these monitors, maybe add Blue Iris to the PC to do some analysis or triggers), I will end up wanting to ditch it in favor of something more configurable.

Would appreciate any thoughts or practical advice from anyone running anything similar.

If you have any good luck with installing those kinds of monitors, I'm also looking into smart tablets vs dumb screens and some addon like a stick android PC.

Do you want to just see the cameras or actually have some type of control?

If just viewing you can run cable to each monitor and just split off the HDMI port off the NVR

Thanks for the suggestion. I may well end up doing that as a backup plan, but ideally they would be android tablets with the ability to watch the feed and zoom in on a camera - i.e. interact with it.

I'm actually looking for the same thing. Aside from having a separate computer everywhere I want a monitor or running multiple HDMI cables (or hdmi over cat5), I came up dry. Is there some sort of remote viewing protocol built into NVRs?
 
Here are a few options - I have used all the equipment below and can testify with positive experiences/results. You can most likely find cheaper options, but again, I can personally testify to the below as being solid purchases/quality.

For mult HDMI devices that are centralized - you can run them to a single monitor/tv over a single cat 5 cable then change between inputs - but again you will need to centrally locate your HDMI devices.
For example, Place a cable/dish box, NVR, DVD player, additional HDMI source in a rack/closet and wire them all to the HDMI matrix switch, then carry 2 cat5 cable to each TV location where you place the receiver box, you can then switch between inputs.

Option 2 is simply come out of the NVR and hit an HDMI switch followed by HDMI to Cat5/6 transmitters and receivers, thus running to each monitor location.

Finally is an in wall flush monitor. Sure you don't have the "interactive ability" however you always have a quick view. IMO you don't need to interact with all your monitors, if there is something I need to review I'll do it from a smart device or PC because most likely I'm going to want to download or export what I find, so I don't need tablets in every location, I just need something to act as a quick view. At any rate these monitors are awesome! I have the 9 and 12.5 - just remember they don't include the power pack so assure you pick it up if you want to use a standard 110v outlet.
