Hi All,

I have just joined and have ordered a new reolink 4k (8mp) CCTV system with 2 x D800 and 2 x B800 cameras.

I am wondering if this is a good choice of system and camera combo ?

Also its comes with 2TB HDD, but is this enough for 4k (8mp) recording for 30 days using h264+ which is what is offers ?

I am used to using hik-vision and ivms app at work and want something comparable really.

If you have any advice that would be great.

Thank

Zen

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 8ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
15) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3
16) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List

Thanks for the info, I have cancelled my Reolink order as it wasnt arriving until 20th and hadn't been dispatched.

Are there no good all in one packages which offer good night time clarity and about 1 month of recording at a reasonable price like £500 GBP or about $650 USD

I guess I will have to keep looking.

Thanks again.

All kits have a compromise that is used to keep the price down. How many cameras were you looking at ?

I would stick with the major manufactures Dahua or Hikvision. Which every vendor you go with get all the equipment from the same manufacture and Vendor.

You need to study what are your camera needs. Different locations require different cameras. Look at the IPVM Camera Calculator V3 I think it will do 3 cameras for free. Post an over head picture of your house and where you think you need cameras. Also a street view of the house is useful.

A normal plan is to buy a good NVR and a few good cameras. Then add cameras over time as your knowledge and needs grow. GO SLOW.

if you are interested in International Dahua cameras, a forum member sells dahua (and some Hikvision) and ships world wide. You can read some of the members recommendations on his service. He also provides cameras to other forum member for evaluation and reviews.
you can email him for a quote, or purchase from his Aliexpress store or his Amazon store. The cameras are fully upgradable, he posts upgarde software when available.

Hello zen200, another UK member here.

I found a place in the UK called CU CCTV and they're willing to sell to us common folks and not just installers (think a small large fee added on top of components), seems that they order everything from OPREMA a massive CCTV supplier in Wales. That's if you want things quickly and easier to deal with faulty components.

Bought 4 Dahua 2mp IPC-HDW4231EM-ASE 3.6mm Starlight cameras, 4 Dahua DH-PFA130-E camera mounts and a Dahua NVR5416-16P-4KS2E NVR without a HDD (as a HDD is easy to fit and I had one lying around). They certainly weren't cheap altogether though, but just going through the teething stage as I migrated from analogue to digital.

But if you have a PC lying around somewhere, you could use it as an NVR with software such as Blue Iris. You'd just need cameras, ethernet cabling (needs to be made, off the shelf ones don't play nice with the waterproof boots on the cameras), a POE Ethernet switch or hub and a PC running BI or some equivalent.

But these are just ideas.

Forgot to mention that CU CCTV will provide free shipping for orders over £200, which can be useful.

And as djernie has said take your time, check out footage from cams that interest you on YouTube and everywhere you can. As there's an awful lot available to choose and confuse you.
