Why do you think they need 4 (or even 3) cameras to cover 180 deg if each camera has a FOV of around 90 deg with 3mm lens & 1/2.8 sensor?

I like that they let you adjust the settings for each sensor separately.
 
because you can use higher zoom lenses and get higher pixel density..
180/3=60 degrees per camera
180/4=45 degrees per camera

a single lens 1080p fisheye would have ID capabilities of 2ft, the 4x can reach for ID up to 13ft away which is a bit more reasonable..

I didn't see optional lens sizes, only 3mm. maybe i missed it but i looked as that was my first thought.

and whats that mean on a multi camera pano? nothing I suspect..

i guess i would like to see 45 deg like you mention above, resulting from 6mm lenses vs 90 deg from 3mm with 50% overlap, unless i am missing something that can be done with digital zoom.

There is no 50 percent overlap..you cannot assume fov by simply looking at the lens..

the 4 lens pano really takes care of the resolution concerns I had over the 3 lens pano; has much better recording resolution..
4096×1800 vs 4096×832

these cameras might be running in corridor mode, a 3mm 2MP 16:9 rotated 90 would be pretty close to 45 degrees

Really interesting this camera.
Is this a camera with STARLIGHT technology? 0.007Lux / F2.0 (Color, 1 / 3s, 30IRE)
What is its price, someone has an idea ?

At F2.0, I wouldn't expect this to produce as good of a picture as the starlight varifocal turret that everyone loves PC-HDW5231R-Z which is F1.4.

Considering I've yet to do any cams outside (did the inside first) and am planning out the outside now, I'd rather have 4 cams than a bunch of turrets on all over the place. So it is a cost factor for me. If it's priced right I'll do it. Most likely I'll end up just going with a bunch of PC-HDW5231R-Z since that's already proven to be awesome. And I want to do this now (timeframe of weeks) than later. I can't find these for sale yet. I might want one anyway as a cool way of have a great panoramic shot of the view I have.

I would mount it at the peak of the side of my house facing outward, rolling hills and such.

Understand the appeal of them, however their cost has always been pretty salty. A lot of these panorama cameras come in the $800 - $1000 range for descent quality. I believe the previous 8601 from Dahua was in the $700's maybe. To each his own, but I would find individual cameras both more cost effective as well as a better overall solution unless circumstances require a single mount/line only with no alternative.

I think @nayr is right. they are in corridor mode with only a small amount of cropping. 4096/4 = 1024 pixels per camera horizontal (94% of 1920) and 1800 vertical is 94% of 1920 for vertical. The DORI distances are the same as the 2.8mm lens version of the IPC-HDW4231EM-AS (250ppm at 4m).

I suspect that @zero-degrees is correct in that these will cost 4x or more what the IPC-HDW4231EM-AS costs, around $700+. Elegant but a bit costly.
