My father served on the battleship USS Nevada in the engine room on December 7 1941. It was the only battleship to get underway, before being ground to prevent it for sinking in the channel. He had just turned 20 yo a few days before. He passed in 2010.
Truly the greatest generation. Only a few remains from that day.
The last time I went to the memorial, I heard a man behind me crying during the movie documentary portion. I turned around and it was a very elderly Japanese man with his wife. Turns out he was on one of the carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor (don't know what his position or rank was). IMO he had nothing to cry for...he served his country. Very nice couple. It will truly humble you. The whispers and voices. Wow.
