motion detection question

I have a new setup I just installed: a Dahua NVR and 2 Dahua turret cameras. The motion detection works great when a human walks by and emails me a picture immediately. But when a deer walks by it does not trigger an event. I want to capture humans and wildlife with motion detection. On the NVR under Alarms I have motion detection enabled. I also have SMD enabled. Do I need to disable SMD so it picks up any object moving? Do I need IVS running with a rule? This is my first system so I'm new to all this.

Here is the hardware I have running:
Loryta NVR4108-8P-4KS2
IPC-T5442TM-AS 3.6mm
IPC-T5442T-ZE

Generally speaking
- Make all changes on the cameras not the NVR
-Yes SMD and IVS with Human/Vehicle filters will eliminate deer, so turn those off. Normal IVS or MD with no human/vehicle filter will pickup cats and even squirrels so I'm sure it will see deer.

This may be of some help
***PSA for those with a New DAHUA NVR with Built-in PoE switch

interesting. so make my changes on the camera instead of the nvr. Is this a best practice or does it give you more options to tweak? thanks for you help.
