Have a ~80ft oak in my front yard that I use for a poe cam facing my house from the street. We had a massive lightning storm this week and around 12am heard a crack loud enough to make me wonder if it actually hit our house. Went downstairs to look out of the windows and see anything obvious. Could smell something burning but couldn't put my finger on it. Left for work the next day and saw my front yard looked like a bomb went off. Huge pieces of wood everywhere, on my roof, on my neighbors roof ~50ft away. I looked up and saw the tree was the one hit. From one of the highest branches, through the core then spiraled out the side right into my camera.
I have a ~120ft run and ~40ft buried of outdoor cat6 going to that camera. Took out the camera (obviously), blew it clean off of its base. The poe switch (the burning smell), my L3 switch, and the dell r720 I used for recording storage. Here is the aftermath for your enjoyment.
