Ispy monthly fees

Another one is Netcam Studio which I believe allows a couple of cameras for free with no other restrictions.

mangocam is a really good non self hosted solution. Just that their motion detection doesn't always work. You'll have to use continuous recording with them and the UI kind of sucks... but even then still an awesome service. Works really well for its purpose.

If you want a self hosted solution I started one written in node.js I invite you to take a look if you are interested in hosting your own CCTV.

Sending your video over the net is got to be the silliest way to store video data. It has some terrible flaws.
1) requires that the internet connection actually be working.
2) uses lots of bandwidth
3) ridiculous monthly fee
4) severe storage limitations
5) a third party now has access to your video and you rely on them to keep it secure
6) direct streaming for mango (not using ftp, many cameras dont even support video via ftp) requires port forwarding, a serious security issue.
among others..
Save your money, hide a nas as backup somewhere in your own home...enjoy much more storage and the security it provides.

Man, streaming multiple IP cameras to the cloud would use up huge amount of bandwidth and some customers such as Comcast ones, would find some rude surprises. What I do is record locally to my Blue Iris server and sync the recordings to the cloud which is much more reasonable in terms of bandwidth.

well i guess... but building connections should not have limited bandwidth.

This is at least the reasoning I go with. Every location including my home has unlimited bandwidth so these kinds of setups are practical for me and much safer. I prefer to store things in the cloud as soon as I can. Just imagine if someone just stole or broke your DVR before it uploaded? Well in any case I am not saying mangocam is epic, its good as a temporary or if you don't want to host it yourself or dont really care much about UI and performance.

I am making Shinobi to be the best of all worlds. Beautiful and useful with great performance. Along with being able to host it yourself.

unlimited upload doesn't mean squat, your upload bandwidth will be limited, unless you've got a gigabit or faster fiber connection to the ISP, one camera? maybe okay, 10 cameras? Hope you didn't wanna watch netflix. You don't need to upload 10 hours of your empty front lawn to the cloud, you could do motion detection and only record things that are interesting. Still crappy, but not as bad. What I do is when a camera is triggered, on top of sending me an alert, the system takes snapshots continuously while the camera is triggered and attaches them to emails so they are off-site. I would also like to maybe buy an NVR box, like a dahua one or something and stuff it somewhere hidden and have it do nothing but record camera streams 24/7 but I will still probably have snapshots uploaded in email. Syncing all of your cameras video to the cloud is a pointless waste.
 
you can also put flash storage in your cameras and redundantly record to both.. or 'hide' a dummy unit in plain site, or have a redundant nvr/nas hidden in a detached shed/building/safe

cloud storage is neigh worthless, whats stopping them from attacking the service entries before breaking in? There's always a service box nearby someone can get into with keys off the internet and cut service to your house without coming close to appearing on video.. soo for every crazy rare scenario you can think of for cloud backup I can come up with one against it.. Ive seen case reports where people cut all power and communications cables and then went and waited down the street to see if there was any response and to give time for battery backups to expire, given this was a gun shop but the same attack can apply anywhere.

It does mean squat. I have DSL 100 at my home and at my locations with cameras. I have 10 cameras and 3 computers running netflix all day. Also I never said you should do continuous record, i said mango is incapable of doing otherwise in many cases because it uses motion detection, not tracking. I prefer motion tracking based recordings, I am working on getting that in for Shinobi (not motion detection that reads colour changes in pixels). Not even ZM does this yet so we are SOL if the camera itself doesn't do it already. Yes, I know Blue iris!

Really though its not a pointless waste for businesses or high profile users. I know one person who thinks its a pointless waste to record everything locally (funny huh?). Mainly because the place where the cameras are is a place where unruly people might break in and steal the DVR... people have actually gone as far as to steal some of the cameras already. Cloud auto save is really only useful with auto purge, without it it is as you say : wasteful. Since its a given that the DVR should have auto purge that is a non issue. I actually had the DVR not work and the cameras still work... just went IP after that. With IP may as well go the safe road if the road is open for you to take.

true. In such cases we also have mobile internet as a back up connection. Which is also unlimited and gets up to 50/5.. by the time the main internet is out our netflix is off and we are wondering what is going on.

tis why I've got something pinging my WAN address from offsite in case my internet goes down for any reason lol.

4g on a grandfathered unlimited plan from Fido. its actually supposed to be faster but the hardware is not good.

totally makes you question how much capitalism has taken from us. Do we even need copper running through our city for internet? If we don't... why do we? dum dum duuuuummmmm
