Generally, an i9 is overkill for 98% of most workloads. I made that number up, because I didn't want to say 100%. Seriously, unless you're doing some ridiculously heavy processing 7x24x365, an i9 is overkill. Now, if you want to impress people with how much you spent for your processor, an i9 is perfect. But you'll never get your money's worth out of it. An i5 is adequate, an i7 is about perfect.
