A client needs a laser tripwire type of system for a museum. It would be like a garage door sensor and when the beam is broken an alarm goes off. Is there such a thing?

I did a lot of googling

You can use the active infrared beam sensor (also called photoelectronic beam sensor). They come with pairs, including IR transmitter and IR receiver. The active infrared beam sensor is widely used perimeter sensor for exterior protection.
