If I had unlimited budget... I'd buy Dahua and Hikvision and save the rest for beer.

Best depends on your needs...which you dont mention...they have a q17 camera with a 4/3 sensor 10mp...then there are ptz, or domes etc...

Here are the specifications for the Axis with the 4/3" sensor. The lux ratings do not look all that good considering the size of the sensor.

Keep in mind that manufactures all rate lux differently, so they can be used as a general guide within the same brand but not between brands....

True enough, but that is quite a difference from a Dahua camera with the same size sensor.

Yes but the dahua does not even provide a distance at which they test...so many variables..
Or shutter speed. That has a significant impact on how much light is needed.
A wide open slowed down shutter doesn't need much light, but motion will be a blur.

I don't have a need but a want haha. Just want to treat myself with a sought after ip cam and you guys know a thing or two about a highend cam. If you have another brand worth checking out I'm all ears.

Even with high end cams they serve different needs...axis has a 3200 dollar 2mp dome ptz...surely that would be a poor choice for 99.9 percent of applications...
if you just want to piss 2k down the toilet go to a casino....or ask your wife to go to costco....
Many of us already feel like the Dahua OEM cameras sold by @EMPIRETECANDY represent the best overall value in terms of cost and performance day and night and feel like the incremental cost increase for a more expensive camera doesn't equate to the same incremental amount of performance improvement.
Although if Axis made a 2MP 64mm varifocal camera on a 4/3" sensor and could read plates at night in color with very little light, then I may change my mind LOL.

Axis do a very good job at performance and quality, but they tend to be late in new technologies. Such as a panoramic + PTZ, which software stitches the panoramic video into a single stream....
Compared to Avigilion; Axis software is far more responsive in my option.
I also think that Axis software also tends to be less buggy and have weird anomalies than Dahua & Hikivison.
I also kind of like the less-vivid color from Axis cameras when you're staring at a video wall for 8 hours.

8k would be interesting to see some caps vs 4k and night
, I keep wondering how long before Dahua/Hik start doing 8k at a vaguely economic priceOnly about $5k for the axis. Good choice for government using unlimited tax $$$.
The first IP camera I ever bought was an Axis interior camera. I used it to watch my kid's playroom when they where little (so 15-20 years ago). I think it was 1.2mp, low resolution (this is before HD was popular, so 480p at best) and it didn't have IR. Of course IP cameras have come a long way in 15 years. They were all terrible back then! I'm not trying to knock Axis with this post. It just brought back some memories.....

I am seriously looking at the Axis Q1898-LE 10MP 12-48mm varifocal camera. I love the large 4/3-inch sensor. I like the 90-degree view at 12mm. I like the 4.9 foot minimum focus distance. I like the 4K UHD. I will think this over for the next couple of days before I make a decision. Here is a link to the camera that I might be buying. This will probably replace two cameras if it works like I think it will. One more thing. I will be hooking it up to a Hikvision NVR.
