Since adding another camera, my cpu was running way too high, so I followed the instructions on optimizing BI for cpu.
First, I set each camera to record direct to disk. So far, no problem.
Next, I set the hardware acceleration to Intel, and restarted BI

Now, BI gets to the logo/splash screen and then crashes. If I reboot, it gets as far as showing the color bar frames for each of my cameras, before crashing.

I probably need to undo that acceleration setting, but can't get back to the settings without crashing.

Hoping I don't have to completely reinstall BI!

No need to reinstall BI.

Open the registry editor (Start Menu > type regedit) and in the text box at the top, paste in

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Perspective Software\Blue Iris\Options

[press enter]

Find the line with the name hwaccel and edit its value, changing it to 0.

OMG, you ARE the man! The email was on my phone, so no way to copy the regedit path, but I had no problem drilling down to that key.
I just did not have the time to reinstall, and of course I have not backed up my settings since adding several cameras.

You just don't realize how dependent you are on BI...until it's broken!
Maybe I should pay for the upgrade, even though this version has been working fine for me. Just to help out the excellent coder. Without me doing a search, is the new version better at conserving the CPU? That might be a valid excuse to justify the cost to my boss (wife).

The new version is 35 bux to upgrade. Worth every penny as that is the way you will get new features in the future. It supposed to be more efficient but the difference is minor. What is your cpu and your camera load? What brand cameras are you using?

Running on an Acer laptop with an Intel i3-7100u. 2.4ghz.
I have been running 5 cameras for quite awhile with no issues, but cpu started maxing out when I installed a 6th. Guess I will just stick to 5 cameras until I can afford to upgrade my pc.
Running 4 Dericams and an old Trendnet. The new one is an Amcrest.

blue iris does not care about the number of cameras, its the total fpsx total resolution. You can buy a desktop pc that has 2.5x the power of your laptop for under 100 bux.

That is it. Was that just added? I missed it as I feel like I visit that page every other day.

0-500 MP/s ----- 3rd-7th gen i5 desktop CPU (4 cores)
500-800 MP/s --- 3rd-7th gen i7 desktop CPU (4 cores + hyperthreading) or 8th-9th gen i5 desktop CPU (6 cores)
800-1100 MP/s -- i7-8700 (6 cores + hyperthreading) or i7-9700 (8 cores) or the K edition of either
1100-1500 MP/s - i9-9900K
1500+ MP/s ----- Then it varies. Pick something near the top of this chart, or consider a different VMS than Blue Iris.
 
Any ideas why this would happen with a processor that supports Quick Sync?

I have an i5-6400 that shows GPU processing in task manager when I log into remote viewing, but when I enable the intel option in BI, it defaults to this crashing behavior in both BI 4 and 5.

I have tried all sorts of cleanups etc. to get past this and am doing a Windows reset right now because I just want to start over with it all. Am I wasting my time with this processor or is there something else I should be looking at?

There is nothing wrong with the processor. Perform a clean windows install using the MS media creation tool. Dont use reset.

I appreciate the advice on that as the only way to really clean things out, but I got lucky with the reset and have a fresh BI 5 up and working with full GPU decode now. I'm very happy to see my CPU load drop by about half and room to turn some settings back up!

Hard to say what was causing the problem or why, as I have had 4 running for the last two years on this dedicated PC. I never realized it was not setup until today though.

Interesting. What is a full GPU decode?
 
Sorry, I don't mean to confuse with that phrase, but I mean all of my streams are making use of it.

@fenderman, I'd like to do a clean install,(aka format the SSD c:) vs. Windows reset option before installing BI5. Is this the MS media creation tool you mention? Download Windows 10
Once downloaded, is there a preferred method for format the drive and reisnstall? I am reading all sorts of different recommendations on how to do it when Googling.

yes. Download the tool and it will download windows and install it on the usb installation media.
Boot from the usb and simply follow the installation process and delete any preexisting partitions when it asks you.

Why not use the media tool to format?
 
That's what I am trying to understand...I was under the impression the media tool was just for creating a Win10 disc...
but after creating that not sure how to format the SSD drive and reinstall it.

The media disk will do it.
