How did you try the update? Via the NVR web GUI (using what browser?), or the VGA/HDMI interface on a USB stick?

I used the USB key, and I was able to update version v3.4.106 and I see that it is the most advanced version that I have found on the platform, it dates from 2021 and is it can support MODEL DS-2CD2546G2-I IP cameras which is in V5.5.801 build 210727. I don't have the camera with me and I would like to be sure

That camera should work mostly ok if you use h.264 and not h.265 for the video encoder.

I'd expect that to work OK also, except that again, using h.265 will give an 'unknown stream type' on the VGA/HDMI interface.
Using IE11 with the webcomponents plugin should render h.265 video OK though.
